Slow loading on MHEG 5 Teletext

Looking to buy a small, cheap Saorview Approved TV for bedroom. However, it would appear that some of these........Walker, Techwood and Finlux load the new Aertel teletext very slowly, around 30 seconds, I believe. I am looking at the Nordmende NM22906FHDM4 22" which according to Saorview.ie, is Saorview approved. What I don't know and can't find out........what is the teletext loading time on this model? Has anyone any experience with this TV.

Nordmendes are thin on the ground.

For a tv of that size there are plenty of options over a fairly small price range.

I can tell you that LG tvs seem to do the MHEG5 very well.

The Nordmendes are the same as the Walkers (same chassis) so they will also be slow loading the text.

Ive seen them in action and they are identical to the Walker brand. Slooooooowww Text.

Can you advise if the LG 22" LV250U is fast loading. I ask the question here because I was in Harvey Normans, Currys and Power City today and all are unable to answer this slow loading question. Even though we are a couple of weeks after the official launch of Saorview, they are not set up with terristrial antenna's to test this service and verify this question in the shop. So, if you buy a TV, you're buying a pig in a poke and you wont know until you get home and test this yourself. Not very satisfactory, really.

That's quite true. I can't recall seeing a Harvey Norman's with a terrestrial feed on the TVs. And I tried out a Walker for text yesterday - it was horrible to use! Every single page took what felt like an age to load.

I had a low end LG and MHEG-5 was very slow.

I have a high end Samsung now and it's very fast.

I would say it's less to do with brand but processing power inside the TV.

Its been said on boards.ie many times, I think, that if you waited for Saorview Certification, you could be guarenteed that the item would work to perfection. However, both the Walker, the Finlux and the Techwood which are sloooooooooow loaders are listed on the official Saorview Website. What does that say about the Saorview Certification and the peace of mind it was supposed to give the customer?

I agree. I also have a large screen Samsung and the teletext loads instantly. Yet this model isn't listed on the Saorview approved listing.

Not sure about that one, but I would be slow to buy from a B&M shop that refuses to make the effort to test it for you. These shops need to get the message that you are the customer.

If its cheap you are after then how about this one I got about 6 months ago

Can you confirm if this displays the new MHEG 5 Aertel teletext and how quickly does it load.
Also, has it got an MPEG 4 tuner.

Yes it has MPEG4 and MHEG5 and I am quite happy with it so far. It does MHEG5 AERTEL very well. I am using it for PC monitor as well. (note that it is not wall mountable in case that's an issue for you)

The description on Amazon does not tell you it has Freeview but if you go it here on Pixmania http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/4904202/art/lg/m227wdp-pc-22-wide-tft-sc.html#pix-review
you will see that it is TNT HD with DVB-T tuner which is compatible with Saorview (but not Saorview approved.)

I have a Sony, too. Just a short delay (a few seconds) in loading text. Mine's a W5500. What's yours?

Yes indeed you're right. Took this info (Pixmania's review : LG M227WDP-PC 22" wide TFT Screen (5 ms) - glossy black The LG M227WDP-PC 22-inch TFT monitor doubles as a TV with a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080 and a built-in MPEG4 tuner) from that page and it confirms it has the MPEG 4 Tuner. I am prepared to buy this now but just before I do what is the loading time for teletext. I have a 40" Samsung and this loads instantly. Thanks for your valued input.

    I bought a 19" LG LU4000 from Richersounds, MHEG5 fast without doubt.

It's more than a little odd that retailers can't organise an aerial feed to provide potential buyers with an in-store demonstration.

Local DID assistant manager recently told me the Hanspree 26" was the only TV' they had with the requisite MHEG5 for digital interactive services.

He said this whilst being surrounded by sets which have successfully passed Saorview certification.

AOC's and apparently some Hansprees have been found to have MHEG5 troubles, despite what their spec. claims.

Switiching to Aertel takes about 2 or 3 seconds (loading appears on bottom right of screen). After Aertel appears changing pages is very quick, 1 second maybe, and the cursor is very responsive to the remote control).

I'd suggest reading the reviews on Amazon to satisfy yourself.

While awaiting your valued reply, I did check the reviews on Amazon and after looking forward to buying this, I was taken aback with a couple of bad reviews with regard to the sound quality. I think I can see where the're coming from because I have a 19" Flexscan computer monitor which cost an arm and a leg and the sound quality on this is just good enough as a monitor with a very low maxium volume and this leaves me worried about the LG.

Thought about this overnight and since this is not my main TV and for bedroom use only, I have placed the order with Amazon.

    Thanks again.

There must be some pretty poor quality programming inside the RTE MHEG streams. I have a Silvercrest Lidl TV at home in Donegal that takes ages to load a single Digital Aertel page yet BBC Red Button MHEG text is almost instantaneous on the same set.

I have one of those Lidl Silvercrest TVs, my brother-in-law has a certified Walker - MHEG-5 takes ages to load on both. (The Walker and Silvercrest TVs appear to have almost identical menus, style etc., only the non-certified Silvercrest has no reference to Saorview within the menu)

I have accessed MHEG-5 Aertel on Sony, LG, Samsung and Philips TVs without any real delay.

I have a Walker 26" in the bedroom, which is (to me) the worst piece of electronics i have come across in many years.
All functions are very slow, even the volume control. It can take up to 8secs just to display the info screen. Randomly ignores any remote command.
More than once has locked up, wont even switch off. Refuses to change channel to anything other than ch1. often any digital channel will display "no signal" for up to 5 secs. on, and on, and on,...:(

It probably fair to say that the TV does not have a "rich" sound and I had also seen a few negative posts about the sound on amazon before I bought it. But for a small bedroom tv, high spec speakers are not a priority for some people. There is a headphone jack so if you are not happy with the internal speakers you can connect a set of external pc speakers. (Aldi do good ones for less than a tenner).

If you had no limit to your budget then you could probably spend an extra €100 on a more high end 22 inch. In your original post you mentioned you were looking for something reasonably priced which is why I suggested that particular model.

Hope you'll be happy with your purchase.

TV arrived yesterday. I have set it up in the bedroom and yes, the sound is a bit tinny when left on default settings. However, when turning up the bass to max, it compensates quite a lot for this. As you said, the MHEG5 text response time is fast and mirrors the performance of my larger 40" Samsung. Overall, I am chuffed with my purchase and delighted with your valued advice. Another sale lost to the stores, mentioned in my earlier thread, who were unable to demonstrate or answer the simple question........"what is the responce time for MHEG5 on any given TV"?

It should tune the channels when you select "Antenna", provided you have an aerial, which is necessary, connected.

D'oh, thought there was an internal one. Will try that tonight.

No joy, the flat doesn't have a normal aerial point, just a box for ntl. Guess I can get an adapter although will that mean I can pick up saorview, would I be better getting an aerial like this?
