Good Deal?

Met my uncle this morning and he had a new (to him) car - a very clean 06 Primera 1.8 T-Spec - full leather, heated seats, etc 2 years NCT, 17 inch alloys and only 85,000 on the clock.

Basically he got a straight swap for his 04 UK Reg Merc C220 Diesel, 105,000 miles, no MOT, in need of work to pass it and it is in Cork so he would have to bring it back to the UK to pass an MOT in order to import it, VRT would have been €3k

Do you think he got a good deal?

It's a few years since I brought a car in from the UK, but when did the requirement for it to have a valid MOT before you could import it come in ?

For vehicles over 4 years old, an unexpired roadworthiness certificate confirming that an equivalent to the NCT test has been passed. The vehicle will be called for a roadworthiness test (NCT) shortly after registration.
    Unless there's been some change.

Meh, obviously the person that swapped thinks there's an advantage to getting the Merc sorted and VRT'd. Depends on the work needed to get it right really. If he's happy with it then it's not a disaster. I'd rather the Merc though...

Hmmm...the Revenue VRT document linked to in that thread says that it's not required

Has anyone been asked to produce one recently, or had any issues with not having one ?

I VRT'd a UK import a while ago and they took a copy of the MOT cert

There's no requirement for an MOT or roadworthiness test prior to VRT'ing the car here. They may take a look at the MOT cert to verify when it was imported in but nothing else.
