I really need your help, I have long uncoloured hair and its mad greasy at the moment, I normally switch between pantene clarifying shampoo and herbal essences fresh balance and I would have to wash my hair every 2nd day or use the baliste dry shampoo if I was short on time but for the last while my hair is greasy by the end of first day and I dont want to start having to wash my hair everyday. I only put minimal conditioner at the very ends of my hair and dont really use any styling products. I dont like using the Baliste too often as I found before it irratated my scalp if used too much

I have looked at kerastace bain clarifiant and redken scalp relief oil detox on line and can get for OK price on look fantastic.com so was going to treat myself, has anyone used them before? or even if anyone could recommend an alternative as this really is dring me mad,
    Thanks so much

I'm not a hair stylist but I was having the same problem with the shampoo just not being effective anymore and funnily enough it was Herbal Essences.

When I used it I had squeaky clean hair but I think I was actually overdoing the washing with it and my hair was over compensating because it cleaned so thoroughly. As far as I know clarifying shampoos are meant to be used just every once in a while to remove product buildup not all the time.

I alternated Herbal Essences with John Freida Go Blonder Shampoo and now my hair is back to normal and needs to be washed every 2-3 days which was normal for me before it started to get oily.

I also have a habit of touching my hair all of the time and that didn't help either so I'm working on that.

Thanks for the reply Victoria, I have been using herbal essences every other day for the last number of weeks as I thought it was susposesed to be good for greasy hair:rolleyes: I never tried john frieda before so might get a bottle in boots tonight, have you every tried either the redken or kerastace shampoos?

Yeah I think my problem was that it was so good for greasy hair
    Can't win really.

I haven't tried those ones yet no sorry, if you'd like to try some of the John Freida shampoos I bought some travel size ones in Boots which would be great so you wouldn't have to get big bottles. They were 3 for 2 as well :)

mine gets like this sometimes, usually in the weeks before I am due a trip to the hair dresser. Try boots own brand clarifying shampoo. I've found it great for giving my hair a good proper clean. I do use batiste every second day but its as much to give my fine hair a bit of a lift as to take any greasieness out. Also bizarre as this might sound I find if i put a small dot of moroccan oil on my palm and smooth through my hair before I dry it stops my hair getting greasy as fast. It was only when I was doing this a few weeks I was getting to only wash my hair every third day

My immediate thought was the shampoo too. The likes of Pantene and Herbal Essence can weigh your hair down sooo much, regardless of if it's supposed to be clarifying or not. I've used Aussie shampoos and conditioners and couldn't recommend them more.

yup far as I know Pantene has a lot of silicon in it and will coat and weight down the hair. To be honest I personally find that if I use any shampoo by itself too much I get build up so I rotate a few bottle instead and if I get that greasy build up feel I use the build up remover one.

The other thing I find helps is to lather the life out of your hair like they do in the hair dressers get the product properly scrubbed in. I used to add a teaspoon of baking soda to my hair if I felt it was greasy and flat and weighed down and that really works too it gets everything out and its cheap as chips

Tresemme have a range called 'Naturals' that are sulfate free (shampoo) and silicone free (conditioner), so you could try that and see if it helps OP.

Personally I can't even get two days out of my hair, but I've given up the fight and just shampoo every day anyway.

Kerastase is excellent as well as Semi Di Lino's sulphate free range. Both are expensive but definitely worth it. I have managed to get 2 days out of my hair now with the use of dry shampoo. I do have a problem with having really really dry ends, which I get trimmed every 6 weeks. Also my fringe is very difficult to keep grease free. Any suggestions anyone?

I had the same problem. I was using Lush shampoos. Switched to pantene and it solved the problem. I don't think that it's cos pantene are the best brand for greasy hair or anything, I think it's just if a brand isn't working try a few of the other supermarket ones and it might balance out. I find putting mousse in my hair before drying helps and letting moisturiser soak fully into your skin before you lie on your pillow (so you don't have anything oily for the hair to rub off on).

If you use too much shampoo that can also cause greasiness ;D

Thanks a million for all the replies guys, I got the Aussie mega shampoo at the weekend and also think I will need to alternate different shampoos at the same time as well rather than when I finish a bottle then switch to a different brand, also will try the baking soda out of interest.
Nightwish thanks for your recommendation for Kerastase think I will try that as well, I used to have a fringe a few years ago and had loads of problems with it getting greasy so I just to end up just washing my fringe under the bathroom tap in the mornings and then blowdrying it:eek:

I used to have such problems with greasy hair, I'd wash it in the morning and by the following morning it was just as bad again. Worked my way gradually through all the different brands and eventually I found that the John Frieda ones are very good for my hair, I can normally stretch to 3 days now. And as a treat for my hair I sometimes use the Molton Brown Ziao Jao shampoo which is pricey, but I stock up whenever I'm in Kildare Village! I find the Batiste dry shampoo may be handy at the time, but I regret it a few hours later when my scalp feels full of weird residue.

I suffer from hair that can't get to day 2 without being greasy but dry shampoo is now my god and it really works!

Use Pantene Aqualight for really good clean hair and then use a spray of dry shampoo (the coloured ones for coloured hair) underneath your hair where you need it or I spray my brush and work it in that way on the top sections. If you have a fringe spray the underside a few times with dry shampoo and it will stop it getting stringy thoughout the day!

Try the new John Freida Volume Refresh Spray as well, very nice...

I feel your pain! Exactly the same problem, hair stays fresh for one day at best.
I mentioned to my hairdresser, after she told me a blowdry would last on her hair for 3/4 days! I should be so lucky, one day and its gone. She suggested that the greasy hair/clarifying shampoos were making the problem worse and that I should try a moisturising forumla - crazy as it sounds it worked! I think the more pricey brands are definatley worth the money, you use a lot less of them and need to wash you hair a little less, so def worth a few extra quid.

The other tip is not to use any creamy shampoos, but try to use clear/jelly like consistencies and same goes for highly prefumed shampoo - steer clear. As other posters mentioned all of these lead to build up in the hair.

I do use the Pantene "Swish" (sorry can't remember the name) formula one every week or so, just to remove any residue - happy days:)

I used to be the same had to wash my hair every second day. By the evening of day two it was so greasy it had to washed.

I used to give my hair one wash and started giving it two, it probably sounds stupid and you might already wash it twice but it helped SO much! Also if I'm wearing my hair down I pin a bit from the front back in a twist and keep it off my face, keeps its from getting greasy! :)

Indeed cold water really does help.

I have super greasy hair, honestly I can wash it at 7am and it will feel greasy by that evening.

I have spent a fortune on every type of shampoo, pre treatment etc..

With all my knowledge and experience of what worked for me, I'll hopefully help your greasy hair woes..

Jojoba oil is AMAZING, I use it about three times a week (I've gone from washing my hair about ten times a week, seriously thanks to pre treating it with jojoba.

So, massage a good helping of oil throughout your scalp.

Then add a generous dollop to your shampoo.

I promise it doesn't leave your hair oily,

    Please read this

Then as a final rinse I get cold filtered/rain water/spring/bottled (brita filtered is grand), pop in 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar and maybe a little essential oil of your choice, tangerine or grapefruit or lemongrass is my fav.

Throw your head over a sink/bath )save the discomfort of freezing cold water cascading down your back in the shower!

Make sure the rinse gets to your scalp.

Lemme know how you get on!

re the sulfate free shampoo I bought one of them (tigi massive hair) and unfortunately it did nothing for me at all!

Re the baking powder if you are doing that - wet your hair, add shampoo to your hand, add about a teaspoon of baking soda to your hand and lather them up together into your hair then rinse.
