You have got a big budget by the looks of it. You should check out the Rancilio Silva.

Having said that make sure you buy a very good grinder as well. A rubbish grinder will make you expensive machine a bit pointless. Also, always use fresh bean only, avoid supermarkets, order from some roaster directly.

Thanks for the advice aristotle25. I read some reviews of the Rancilio Silva on the web and they are pretty good. One concern is the length of time it takes for it to get ready after it's switched on. I read that people use timers to switch it on 40 minutes before they get up.

It's for my wife and the "bean to cup" machines would probably be better for her. She absolutely loves good coffee but would probably prefer one that she can switch it on when gets up and have it grind the beans etc. On the other hand I'm worried about the reliability of the bean to cup machines. I've had problems in the past with coffee machines leaking water. The more automation a unit has the more things that can go wrong.

On a separate issue, there appears to be a big difference in price between Ireland/UK and Germany. I heard a guy on TV recently saying that you should never buy an expensive coffee/espresso machine over the internet. The difference in price though is sometimes 50%. Any thoughts on this?

Still needs to heat up. Maybe not 40mins but at least 15. There is a drill you can go through with the Silvia for a 5min warm up.

Some very bad feedback on one particular web based provider here and everywhere. Do a search here on who you are thinking of using.

We bought this one at xmas, second hand mind, but its fab. Hubby drinks mainly coffee but I like the cappuccino from it. Easy to clean from my point of view.
