Hi Guys and am looking to use someones knowledge here hopefully. I'm disabled and have been awarded a primary medical to help on the car side of things. I can't afford a new car so it will be a used car i buy from a garage with some work done to the car to help me.

Things i DO understand is free car tax, free toll bridges nationwide and money back on petrol up to 600gallons per year.

Things i DON'T understand. I will be registering car as a disabled passenger, i can drive sometimes but not that often due to heavy medication. Now my wife is my carer and she will be doing most the driving.

Question 1 is whos name do i put the car in, mine or the wifes (carer)

Q2 How much of a refund do you get, vat/vrt on say a purchase of 6000euro. I've found a car, left a deposit and am quite happy. Just waiting for adjustments to be done to motor.

Thanks to anyone who can help it will really help me out. Citizens info is all over the place as is the hse and welfare, they all contradict each other on certain answers,

    Cheers

Car should be registered in your wife's name and it'll be her claiming the VAT/VRT refund.

You'll get a VAT refund of 21% of the purchase price and the VAT element of the modification costs.

As for VRT I'm not sure you will get any refund but am open to correction.

For the toll free use of roads you should apply to one of the concessions, East Link for example for their card. Card may be use don all tolled roads but only with you as the passenger in the registered car. If you were driving other than on the M50 you'll need to pay tolls if car is in wife's name.

Firstly what you will need is a letter of authorisation, you get one of these by sending a DD1 form to Dept. of repayments Monaghan. This can take anywhere from 2-6 weeks to be returned. (YOU MAY HAVE THIS STEP DONE BEFORE)

If you are going to be a passanger then it will be regerstered in your wifes name with you referenced as the qualifying person on the form.

Now when it comes to using the scheme to purchase a used car i am a little unfamiliar. You will apply for a refund of both VRT and VAT. The VRT will be the amount calcualted by revenue HERE. Fill in all the deatails of the car your buying and it will give you the VRT amount. To calculate the VAT Purchase price - VRT amount, then devide this figure by 1.21. This will be the cost of the vheicle to you. As has been said you can also reclaim the VAT on the cost of adaptions aswell, bear in mind in can take upto 8 weeks for VAT & VRT to be refunded.

Quite sure as OP said the car is being bought with him as disabled passenger.

    Are you certain?

He would be the holder of the primary medical cert so should the car not be registered in the holders name?

He did say he would be driving occasionally, though. Does this make a difference?

I have a feeling that somebody told me one time that when you become a disabled passenger that you must hand up your licence.

My wife is the PMC holder, car is registered in my name as we applied for exemption with her as passenger.

What happens then when you want to upgrade your car after 2 years? Do you get the full resale value or the value minus vat/vrt?
