So I'm going to S.Africa in 3 weeks for 20 days. Wondering how much money should I bring? Have absolutely no idea what the cost of food or drink is like over there? I need to order my currency from the local bank so wanna have a good idea of how much to bring.

Drink is cheap, depending on the bar but a small bottle of beer is between 10-15 rand sometimes cheaper. 100 Rand would get you a good dinner. If you have cooking facilities food in supermarkets is cheap. The steak and seafood in S. Africa is really good too. Enjoy....great country!

Just bring a bit to get from the airport to accommodation and use an ATM

I agree with the above poster, bring enough to get from the airport & then use the ATM's from there. How much you will need will depend on what activities you are doing, ie: shark diving, kruger safari etc. As already stated food & beer is very cheap & you will be spoilt for choice in that regard.

SA is a fantastic country, im very jealous :)

Went there last year for a work training thing, from what I could see, there are ATM's everywhere. I used to bring about 500 Rand everywhere as my kinda base money and top it up as I went around.

As said, a pint cost me 17 rand and got a nice pub grub meal for 60 Rand. Its alot cheaper than Ireland in that respect. Hope ya enjoy it!

Just be careful if you're with AIB - They've brought in this ridiculous restriction whereby you can only withdraw €100 per day from your account when you're overseas. I know a few people who've been badly caught out as a result.

Thanks for your replies. Gave me a clearer idea anyways.

Thanks for that. I think I'll bring €200 with me to start me off anyways.

We brought €600 worth of currency for a two week stay last year. A lot of rand to carry over but stored in room safe straight away. The €600 lasted well into week two, eating and drinks are really good value for money(amazing food for the price of a grubby sandwhich here).

Plenty of ATMs everywhere we went, I would recommend pre-loading your credit card before you go, that way you wont need to carry as much cash while you are there, but because you have the money on your card already you won't be facing a big bill when you come back.

Enjoy SA, it's an amazing country :D
