I've just finished 1st year App. Psych, but next year I'm switching to Arts. I'm going to do English as my major subject - do we do all the modules in second year, or do you have some choice? And if so, do you have to choose before college starts again, or is it sorted when we're back?

I'm not an English student but you're best to consult the departmental website for more solid information.

As is the norm with most 2nd Arts subjects is that the module selection process is less rigid and you've more choice and liberty to choose what you would like.

You pick some of the subjects when you're registering for 2nd year and then you've to sign up for seminars, other modules and the like when you're back on campus.

Other Boardsies will advise I bet. Give the thread a few days.

Each module is worth 5 credits and each seminar is worth 10 credits. If you're taking English as your only subject then you will have to do 2 seminars and make up the rest with the 5 credit modules, with 60 credits being the required target. You choose your modules and seminars when you get the second year handbook and there is a really good variety to choose from. Also you will have the option of changing modules if you don't particularly like them. I think you have about 2 or 3 weeks to change your selected modules to the preference that suits you. Hope that helps!

Just a quick note OP, English can't be taken as your "only" subject, no subject can, only as a Single honours does it relate to "only". This means you study 50 credits and 10 of another subject. That's if you want to study a dominant level of English.

You can structure what you want to do, like 30, 40, 50, or even 20 credit levels.

Is that you Jessica? Pretty sure you have a choice. Simon here.

English as a major is broken up into three modules 1st term, three 2nd term, and a seminar.
You must do at least one old English, middle English, or renaissance module.

Hi simon :) Yes, it's me.

thanks for all replies so far. i'm sure I'll find out when college starts bakc, I'm just impatient. If we have to do at least one middle/old/renaissance, can we do two? I want to do old and middle, and the module called romance and realism. I can't wait to go back to college.

Just completed 2nd year English myself and took the Romance and Realism module....it was epic!! I would highly recommend it! It's very interesting and that makes it easy to study for, but it's lucky that the two lecturers are deadly :D
