Yes, myself and the Mrs. are both running it. This will be my third year.

It's a good race and well organised. The course is not too bad, but there a couple of hills in the second 5 km. The first is long and gradual between the 5 and 6 km markers, up the N18 to the turnoff for Ballyalla. The second one, at the 9km mark ,is shorter but a bit steeper. It's worth while holding back a little in the faster first half to get you over those hills.

Looking to beat my time from last year (49:40).

did this last year, it was a lovely run, nice finish and well supported & organised - couple of nice 'inclines' enjoy

did it 2 years ago. good crowds >1000 and good event. nice start and finish area plenty of room.
i dont think the course could be described as tough or unfair. couple of inclines but nothing serious. altho nice downhill at start = not so nice up at end.
think i might do it again this year if i can.

does anyone know if it is chip timed at start and at end.

It doesn't state on the website, but it was chip timed in previous years, so can only assume it will be again.

I feel I may have overstated it earlier when I used the word "hills".. "inclines" is a much better description. :)

Its a local race for me have ran it every year par 2010.

For those travelling on the day the car parks are about a little over 1K from the start. So an ideal warm-up on the way to the start. There have been shuttle buses laid on in the past but most people walk/jog to the start

Chip timing was introduced last year but there was no mat at the start so it only reflected a gun to finish time.

As others have stated there is a long drag between 5 and 6 and a small killer of a climb into lees road and the end of the 8th K. You can still make good time as the rest is relatively flat.

Water stations last year where at 3K 5K and 7K and given in cups.

Considering that nearly 1500 crawl/walk/run this and the start is narrow, if you are doing a PB try and get near the front to avoid congestion.

I do not know if registration will be done on the day but race pack pickup is strictly between 6-8pm on the 23rd and 24th at clare people office.

no . am certain. clocked it about 9.8x last yr, say 150m off. time reflected it as well. , just need to pull the start back i reckon

Yep...have done this twice and the course deffo seemed short. Didn't have a Garmin at the time but based on my times I would say the course i ran was about 200m short.

I remember on last year's thread someone actually contacted the organisers and they insisted it was 10k.

I suspect they may actually be telling the truth as there is huge scope for cutting corners througout the course. Very hard to keep to the official course when everyone around you is taking every available shortcut.

This is correct there are a few spots where you would gain 200m by running the footpath/cutting corners

I thought the only real shortcut is at the Club Bridge where the footpath is well inside the road. I can't there being enough corners to allow a runner to pick up 200m across the rest of the course.

What about steeles terrace and the corner before the hospital

Maybe so. I'll have a Garmin for the first time this year, so hopefully I'll know if I can count the time or not.

Sean Hehir after running 29:43 this morning on course. Great improvements from Sean this year and more to come! :)

Course Record to boot and by all accounts he blitzed the field.

Took 2+ minutes off last years time, but disappointingly the course was short by ~200m according to my Garmin so I can't count it as a PB. I didn't take any short cuts (in fact I was the only eejit who ran on the road at the corner at the club bridge, so I'm at a loss as to how it could have been short by that much) It would be so easy to fix too, just run 300m on the track clockwise instead of 100m counter-clockwise.

Still, it's a fun race and a great cause and well worth the entry fee just for that.

How did your Garmin line up with the Km markers ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,144 ✭✭✭Bally8

Disappointed it was short. I took the long way everywhere possible to try pick up some extra metres. My garmin measures in miles, even with all my wide corners etc it measured 6.1 miles

Every KM marker came early according to the Garmin and it got progressively worse; 20m short at 1KM marker, 100m short at 5KM marker, 200m at 9 km and 220m at the finish line.

that sound very disappointing if the course was short.
i'm glad i didnt do it now.
i know its for charity etc but a short course (if it was) is the worst
