Flight level over built up areas

Before I ask, I must say I really have no clue about Aviation. But I was just wondering, aren't there any laws about the altitude planes are supposed to fly over built up areas?

I live in Charlestown, Dublin (pretty much the last built up area before DUB, directly south of runway 10/28) and up until last week planes never used to fly ABOVE my house, I see and hear them take off every 5 mins and that was it. But around Monday last week they started flying above me house at well under 500m. Theyre really loud and are kinda starting to annoy me. Theyre always propeller aircraft (mainly Aer Lingus Regional). Everytime I hear one go above my house I look in flightradar24.com but theres usually nothing there

Flightradar never seems to show Aer Arann or Aer Lingus Regional flights for some reason. I would imagine that when you have aircraft flying over your area it is because a different runway is in use. The prop aircraft also usually turn faster after take off which also might explain some flights.

These planes were probably taking off from runway 16, which is not used too often, hence why it would have seemed unusual to you. Smaller turboprops turn much earlier on their departures, so that would take them over Charlestown. Even off R28, an early south turn will do the same.

For VFR traffic, the rules are not below 1,500 ft above a built-up area. For these IFR flights though this rule doesn't apply.

US rules is 1,000' above an urban area except when taking off/landing, but must always fly at such elevation that it is always possible to safely land in an emergency, so if you're over Los Angeles, you probably want to cruise a bit higher.

    Thank you for your replies
Forgot to mention, theyre all usually heading south east. If theyre using Runway 16 I don't see why they have to fly over here and turn SE, they had to be using 28 and immediately turned after take off.
I found out they were using runway 16 at the begining of the month but I hadn't noticed anything back then.
Meh I guess Ill just have to get used to this
    EDIT: Sorry I meant SE

Non-jet types are often allowed to turn early, sometimes to clear the standard departure path for a following jet. By most standards the ATR types flown by Aer Arann are considered pretty quiet, so I'm a bit surprised that you would describe them as really loud.

Twenty years or so ago this what you would have experienced flying over you on the departure path from Dublin - and there was no sparing of residential areas!

    (3) Paragraph (1)(b) of this Rule shall not apply to:

    (a) an aircraft while it is landing or taking-off in accordance with normal aviation practice at an aerodrome or heliport;

    http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/2004/en/si/0072.html

This has been normal practice at Dublin for at least 15 years since 28 came into use. All non jet(turboprop) aircraft to the south turn at 750ft towards Killiney. Therefore right over your home. Until recently you would have got BAE146 jets doing the same.

It hasn't just started its been that way for years.

You probably get jets doing it once in a blue moon too to avoid weather. If there's a thunderstorm on the SID they'll turn as soon as possible to avoid. It's cool seeing them turn so soon.

Thats what has been happening the last few days with Rwy 28 in use I have seen wide bodies turn alot sooner(climbing turn) due to the amount of CB in the area,I happen to live right under the flight path of Rwy 10/28 after a while you dont notice them unless it's a wide body and you hear the drown of it and it.s slow climbing rate.

Barely heard any today, so no its not always like this. They probably did used to fly above my hose but not at 200m they didnt.
I understand theyre not generally loud but you can imagine how loud it can be to have them fly above you at 200metres

i live in Finglas all my life and the charlestown area for the last 5 and planes have flown over here from day one, maybe your just only starting to notice them now?

to give an idea what the OP is talking about, these planes are taking off as normal on the runway pointing west but are doing a sharp left turn and heading south while climbing.

Yeah they probably have, but have you actually seen them fly over your house this low before? I never had and neither has anyone else in my house.
