Just wondering what the difference between 1080p (advertised as 'full HD') and 1080i is?

I bought a new SONY internet tv EX403 40" screen LCD tv last December. I have just installed a SONY 32" now for someone and it has a 1080p option in the settings.

I checked the spec for my TV and it says it will do 1080p, though there are no settings for this. Do any of the HD channels transmit in 1080p or it is just for Blu-Ray players? I don't have any equipment that outputs 1080p connected to the TV.

Currently hd channels are only broadcast in 1080i and probably will be for a good while yet.
You will only get full 1080p hd from the likes of blu-ray,playstation,xbox etc.

its just basically two different ways of delivering a picture to the screen, I find 1080i is better when playing xbox games it makes for smoother transitions and 1080p is good for watching hd films
