old surround sound and bluray

We have an oldish Sony surround sound system, DAV SB100, which has scart and composite cables out (the red/yellow/white ones). I've just got a lend of my mum's blu-ray to try out, and have connected via hdmi to tv, and via red/yellow/white cables to surround sound.

Now, it seems as though we can get sound through the front 2 speakers, which is fine, but not what i'm after. Or we can get it as dolby pro-logic, but then we end up getting speaking voices behind us, when we only want the normal sound effects behind us, as in normal surround sound.

So my question ... is it possible to get proper surround sound from a blu-ray through our current surround sound system?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

nope, sorry. the red/white cable are stereo only, the yellow is video. with stereo to get surround you need to do some sort of processing, which means the player guesses at what should be behind/to the sides of you, and doesn't always get it right, which is what you are seeing.

unless your unit has an optical or digital coax input it's not going to work i'm afraid

mossym - thanks a million for confirming that. That was what we thought - but just wanted to make sure. Looks like we'd have to upgrade our surround sound system if wanted to have decent sound for a blu-ray! Not to worry.
