Likelihood of the Scrappage scheme to be continued?

Well as we all know the current Government scrappage scheme will soon be coming to an end?

Just wonder what the likelihood of this being continued?

Did the scrappage scheme help boost new car sales this year? Would it be worthwhile to continue it again this year? Or any signs of it to be introduced in 2012?

Afaik the Government sets aside x amount of money for the scrappage scheme in the yearly budget. Unless there is a mini budget between now and the end of the month where more money is set aside then I cannot see it being extended again.

Unlikely it is going to be continued but i am not sure the above would need to happen. Scrappage is self financing and has actually added 100million to government coffers since it began when all costs etc are stripped out. No need for any budget to be set aside.

I'd imagine it will be back next year but no guarantee.

From reading in the Times a few weeks back I got the impression Renault will again offer the pre scrappage deals they had going a while back to help sales after the gov scheme runs out

If distributors like Renault can offer scrappage scheme prices without the government subsidie, then they don't need any government help to sell cars.

IMO, scrappage scheme prices are what the cars should be priced it. Unless importers can get their head around this and price for the market that's here, car sales will plummet.

Yeah, but I dunno if all the importers agreeing to drop €1,250 off their prices would have the same effect as the scrappage scheme.

For starters, people like free stuff, so a price realignment isn't the same as a Gov't backed "freebie", even if the value is the same.

Secondly the element of scarcity - i.e. time limited and only applying to certain cars - also adds to the motivation to take advantage of it, that wouldn't be there for a simple price drop.

Sure, but that's where the marketing folks come in, telling the public about the BIG SALE, which is never ending but it rebranded every few months. The only people this registers with are the people looking to buy and so the perception is created that the 1250 off the latest new car is a one time only thing. Companies do this all the time.
