Years ago (it was on the TV Show 'Police Six', which should tell you how long ago), I saw an account of an attempted rape on Bull Island.

There was a sketch of the guy who did it and I knew instantly who it was. I wanted to call the police but my mother, who also knew, wouldn't let me.

I understand now that part of her reasoning was that I had been abused as a child (it wasn't until much later that that memory came back, thanks Mum), and she was afraid it would come out.

In any case, it's bugged me ever since and I feel awful. Does this ring any bells? Englishman with bad breath, Bull Island.

It must a very difficult situation for you. You should seek counselling about what has happened to you in the past.

You may have some vital information to 'put away' somebody who is a danger to the community. You can make an anonymous call to Crimestoppers without having to reveal your name and address. Your information may be of great help to the Gardai - it may be the missing piece of an investigation.

It was so long ago, I don't have a clue where to start. And yes, I have my own problems.

You should go to the police in case its still an open file, rape is a deplorable act.

contact a member in Raheny or Clontarf Garda Stations with your information. maybe an older Garda who has been there a good few years will still remember the case and find out if its been solved or not. The Garda cold case unit might also be interested in taking over the investigation if the victim and suspect are still alive.

Absolutely, you should call the Gardaí. They will still be very much interested in the matter.

Is there a statute of limitations on rape?

No. There is no statute on indictable offences such as murder, rape, etc.

However, it is always open to an accused to seek to have the charges struck out because the delay has been such that it would prejudice his/her constitutional right to fair trial. There are many cases on this point in relation to child abuse prosecutions brought 20 years after the incident(s).

Ok: This is serious. No further comments. The above posts suggest what you should do OP.

Do the right thing, because it is the right thing to do.

PS: In an interesting twist, should someone come on here and decide to "test the water" on this. Nothing here goes without trace. Username to IP address to police. Just in case.
