I am sure it will be filled with encrypted channels.

Isnt this just the longterm replacement for Sky TV?

Its there new direct spot sats that will focus mainly on the intended area, which means black outs for the Spanish Sky fans.

FTV channels such as 5 USA and 5* may move on to 1N and become FTA.

For the long term, the main UK terrestrial channels will be looking for additional capacity on satellites with such footprints. The main one is HD, the main progression for BBC1 HD will if it follows the BBC's digital satellite development from the late 90's will be to have BBC1 HD variations for the "national regions" (Scotland, Wales & NI) with the eventual goal of all regions converted to HD and the SD streams switched off when the amount of SD viewers becomes tiny, though that won't be for some years yet. It'll also give the BBC room to upgrade HD services of other channels especially those with no regional variations.

For ITV, for SD transmissions they can enable more regions to broadcast FTA (some can only do so behind encryption at the moment due to lack of space on 2D) as well as an increase in HD transmissions - UTV HD may then appear.

Channel 4, their current Eurobird based FTA HD channel will probably move to a 2D-like beam in due course when capacity becomes available. Again, E4 HD may become possible when the current encryption contract ends. Film4 HD and More4 HD are potential channels as well in the future.

Channel 5 (if they're bothered) could also move their fleet of channels over and drop encryption, HD etc.

There is the possibility of encrypted channels on 1N as well, but I would guess the UK terrestrial channels will be looking to get first digs.

i presume that when its intrim mission is completed at 28.2 and its moved to 19.2 that a replacement will be already in place or does anyone know what the story is in that regard? :)

cheers for that :) Didnt realise that more sats were planned for 28.2 than 19.2 especially considering the number of countries reliant on 19.2e in comparison to 28.2e

they are replacements for the 'ageing' existing 'Birds'.. but will also give more capacity and maybe more 'focussed' coverage....a worry to us expats on the edges of the existing reception!!!

more focused beams and those multipe hotspot sats that will be used for saorsat seem to be the way that its going indeed....utter shame considering the nice broad mix you get on astra 19.2 not to mind 28.2

These would be to replace the current satellites. Astra 2A is bordering on 13 years old with a planned life of 15 years. 2B is also designed for 15 years.

2D on the other hand has a design lifetime of 12 years and was launched in December 2000. It's also expected to lose one transponder at some point, probably due to degradation of the solar arrays. So replacements are needed, lets hope the launches don't fail!

    Did a scan myself

    6 channels found:

    3d tile format
    AB Channel
ASTRA 1N Launch - showing the 1n launch vehicle at the moment on the launchpad itself
    ASTRA 3D Demo
    Radio Beograd
    RTS Sat

Bit wierd that my scanner didnt pick this up before anyways

Didnt realise that they show launches - looks like it has been delayed due to weather tho

It is on hold but not due to weather, a problem was found with a valve. The countdown stopped around the 5 minute mark.

An announcement was made that they haven't identified the cause so will not try again tonight. A statement will be made tomorrow morning.

Was watching the countdown, it was stopped at 1:47 mins because of a valve-failed-to-close indication, the clock was then reset to 7:00 mins.

It was always going to be a tighter footprint with the way that satellite technology and tv rights are going. Cheers for providing a comparison here.

They are still a little optimistic on dish sizes though.

    Kourou, August 5, 2011

The launch of Arianespace Flight 203 has been postponed due to the unfavourable weather conditions over the launch pad in Kourou, French Guiana. Flight 203 will place into geostationary transfer orbit the ASTRA 1N and BSAT-3c/JCSAT-110R telecommunications satellites.

Another launch date will be decided depending on the evolution of the weather conditions in Kourou.

According to the Arianespace iPhone app and VideoCorner they're trying again tonight. Webcast starts at 2138 UTC (2238 Irish time).

    1N successfully launched! :)

The launch was delayed by about an hour due to high altitude winds and it was looking like it wouldn't go ahead but luckily the weather cleared up.

I'm quite surprised: The original footprint can't be correct.
    1N-resized.jpg

According to this footprint no reception in North East Holland with a 60 cm dish. 2011-10-31 started Astra 1N on transponder 11127 V with Channel 4 HD, but reception here in NE Holland is much better than ever...

I wouldn't take any notice of those footprints. Most of western Europe had Astra 2D reception even though it was supposed to be a UK & Ireland satellite.
