Hi, I have received a job offer on condition that I can obtain a full license. I am just starting lessons and the waiting list for the test here is about a month. Is this enough time to learn to be competent enough to pass the test? I know everybody is different but on average is this enough time? Thanks.

It's my second learner permit, I never drove on the first one because I just used it as a form of ID. How long do you think someone would need Permabear?

Hey OP it will depend more on how much driving you can squeeze in to be honest . I reckon you would need to be doing 2-3 lessons a week but then driving yourself at least 1 hour a day between now and the test . It would defo be possible but tough and fairly expensive

The other thing you could do would be after the first week go straight into pre test lessons . They will take you around the course used by the test centre then so you can train yourself on that route

Hi Mick, thanks for the reply. Squeezing in enough driving is not a problem because I am unemployed at the moment so I can pretty much concentrate on driving because it is the only thing stopping me from starting the job (a really good job too!). So I am determined if nothing else!

Ok, so almost 6 weeks to the day after I posted this thread, and I finally had my test today. It was supposed to be on tuesday but the tester was sick, so I managed to get a cancellation for today. Also, I'm due to start work in England on Monday, so I really needed to pass!

So I have been taken lessons, about 16 I think I had at a cost of almost €500, bought a car (Nissan Almera) to help me so that I could practice, take lessons and do the test all in the same car.

Right after turning out of the test centre, he told me to take the first exit. The traffic had backed up onto the roundabout at this exit from a set of traffic lights so I didn't have a clue if I should go and queue up in the line of traffic but block the roundabout, or stay off the roundabout and wait for the traffic to clear but block cars behind me who might be taking other exits. In the end I stayed, and I think I got a blue mark for progress there.

Then at the very next set of lights, he told me to turn right. The light was red but the thing is I didn't know where to stop, whether I could go right up to the junction, or stop short of it (it wasn't a standard junction with traffic lights). In the end, I stopped right on the pedestrian crossing! I was sure this was a red mark, and it was in my head the whole way around the rest of the route.

Everything else I thought went ok, but those first two things kept playing on my mind. Also, I thought the tester wasn't paying attention, so he didn't see me checking my mirrors etc. (although I'm sure he was paying attention, unawares to me).

Finally back at the test centre, he told me I got 7 blue faults and nothing else, so I passed!!! There was a blue mark for road markings, so I guess that was the error at the lights. I went straight to apply for my license and told her that I was moving to England this weekend, so they made it for me there and then and now I have a nice new pink license in my hand!

Sorry for the long essay, I'm just so happy and needed to get it off my chest. Also, to anyone in a similar situation to me, you can do it in 6 weeks for sure, maybe even less. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. If you learn from scratch with a good instructor, you can be good enough to pass the test pretty quickly.

Ah delighted for you I have to say. Took the bull by the horns! Feels great to have that pink license doesn't it!

Best of luck with the driving!

Wow. I must be reterded or something. Did just start learning how to drive 6 weeks ago, or did you know how to drive, but you just started preparing for the test?
    Congratulations
