Go onto DoneDeal and see what similar cars are priced at and go from there.

You need to sell that car privately, you will get a very poor deal if you trade it in, it's just too old.

The trade-in price will depend on what you're buying and what discount you are missing out on due to trading in. Objectively it's a great car but there's limited demand for it (I, by the way, have a 99 520i Touring which runs perfectly). Check the cash price for the car you want at a few dealers to see what you are really being offered as a trade in. Then judge whether you could do better privately (which would be likely to be in or around 3,000- 3,500, i would say).

Donedeal is full of private seller and dealer asking prices, this is totally different to the price a dealer will offer for the car as a trade-in against another one.

OP, the trade-in value of your car will vary from garage to garage depending what you are trading it against and how much the dealer expects to sell your car on for. Realistically, the trade-in value of your car is of little importance if the car you are trading up to is overpriced to begin with. The trade-in value can be fudged to make it look like you are getting a super deal.

The only important figure that matters is the cost to change price that the garage want.
