Hi i'm an average irshman .ie have no clue about cricket, even the people on the news when reading out the scores have no clue what they are saying.

Please i'm not trying to be critical of the game ,but what do you find you like most about it?
I've seen bits of it on the internet and tbh doesnt look a whole lot... then again ive never played it and have never enjoyed it the way ye do.

What skills are needed to be good and why do you feel its a good sport?

Why? Because it's fun. Sounds like a smart answer I know but that is honestly why I, and people who play it, enjoy the sport. For me batting and keeping wicket are fun, just like playing rugby or golf are. There's an immense sense of satisfaction and enjoyment to be got from scoring runs or taking catches.

On a broader level I feel it's a good sport because it challenges you mentally and physically, the same way more popular sports do, and even more so at times. Plus the excitement that a close run match can produce is every bit as thrilling as a soccer or rugby match.

Basically the things that make it a good and likable sport are pretty much universal to sport itself: the fun, the challenge and the excitement. Cricket really isn't that different from the GAA, golf, tennis etc. when you strip it to its core.

Never played other than at school, but it's in my blood

    (I'm a Yorkshireman;))

The first cricket I watched was the 2005 Ashes on Channel 4. It seemed weird, but really entertaining. I was instantly hooked, and I've loved it since then.

I'm not really sure why I like it, except whenever I watch it (especially tests) I'm reminded of Summer 2005, and the opening theme to the coverage, and Ricky Ponting getting angry at being run-out, and all that stuff. It's full of memories for me.

That's basically it, strange reasons maybe, but that's why.

I was bought up with it, played at school for a couple of years, lived, at one point, a minutes walk from the local county team when I lived in England, and then 5 minute walk. Great excuse to sit in the sun??? all day drinking refreshing beverages, often of an alcoholic nature.

Cricket is very simple to watch and enjoy with friends in the sun or in the background on tv and then enough depth if you want it with explaining the lbw law and D/L, the field placings, the impact of the different spin types, the footmarks, left and right handers for example.

Add the ebb and flow + the momentum of the game and it beats golf, track and field, GAA, basketball, motorsport amongst many others for me. Nothing is not possible...you can bat out two days, you can get 10 wickets in a session.

My favourite tv showdown is the Steyn-Collingwood battle in Cape Town/Centurion last year. Steyn on fire, anticipation on every ball and met with discipline, bloody-mindedness and a touch of luck...it was gripping stuff.

Got hooked after the 99 World Cup.

Shane Warne's ball of the century to Mike Gatting, couldn't believe how he did it. Hooked since then! Shows how the special players can spread the game to new areas.

The eternal contest between Bat and Ball.

A good cricket match is all about tension and release.
Once you understand the game, a good game becomes one of the most fascinating spectacles in sport for my money.

    Not a player.

I love a good cricket match. Its actually quite easy to understand and once you do you will be hooked. My son plays (hes 12) so its great to watch the kids learning.

Went to the Ireland v Australia match last year and had a great day so we have tickets for the Ireland V England one in August - can't wait. Its a real family day out - everyone had picnics with them. :D

For me, it's in the blood, growing up with 5-day test match cricket during the summer and ashes on the radio in the winter. Like a physical game of chess.....the next ball could change the entire game - and careers of many.

It's a brutal but a gentleman's game (and for ladies)!

I know why I don't like it ... when I get up for a cup of tea it seems to be the cue (Q, Queue???) for a 3 wicket maiden over on a dead pitch from the worst spinner in who only scraped into the team.

Also doubles as the reason to love it!

Me. Many of my cricket-playing friends. Plenty of people who play cricket that I don't like. Quite a few of the Irish team (exactly like the soccer team).

I'm not sure I understand what you're getting at - could you explain further please?
