    Hi everyone

I have a student here in Naples who is looking to study medicine in this university http://www.hyms.ac.uk/undergraduate/selection-procedure.aspx

Now essentially as I attended Uni in Dublin I am not too up on what exactly is needed for a foreign student to apply to an English university so I just have a few questions on his behalf.

    1. What is the UCAS form?

    2. What exactly should he put in his personal statement letter

    3. Is there anything else one needs to do to make an application?

    4. How should he prepare for the interview process, eg what would the interview consist of?

Mods if this would be better served in the medical forum, please feel free to move it.

Any and all help and information greatly appreciated

Moved to NI & GB Colleges

    1. The UCAS form is the standard college application - I gather it's sort of like the CAO form but I never did a CAO one myself so I can't vouch for it. Everyone has to fill one out, you rank courses in order of preference, fill our various bits of personal info etc. It's done online now and you can also track offers and the status of your application through the site. There's a good info section for international students here.

    2. The PS is really what makes or breaks the application, and I can't stress that enough. Particularly in medicine that's wildly oversubscribed with more than qualified candidates, it's really how you separate yourself from the pack. Schools and students devote vast amounts of time to the writing and re-writing of the PS. Essentially it's a cross between a 'why you should pick me' and 'why I want to do medicine' essay. The forum The Student Room is a goldmine of information on the subject (and also med courses and the UCAS process) frequented by both current college and secondary school students who have been through and are going through the process themselves. There's also a private forum on there where mods proof-read personal statements and suggest revisions etc.

    3. He will need to sit the UKCAT (clinical aptitude test) - there are centres in Milan and Rome that administer it. This website has more info.

    4. The interview style and content vary for each course but you will find some information over on The Student Room from people who have done them for medicine.
