Got a call to my business phone today from private number. Guy with english accent said he was from/representing google.ie(can't remember exactly which) and said he was doing a deal which would get me on the top of the list of google searches.
Sounded fishy to me and was a bad line. I asked how much it would cost but he wanted to explain first, I told him I wouldn't be paying anything, he said bye.

Anyone get calls like this? Is it legit or what is the story?

    Figured as much.

On a similar note I got one of those emails today from supposed solicitor where someone died/ no next of kin/ same surname as me/ 18.5m quid in bank etc.

Scary thing is he didnt want my bank details, wanted my name , address and telephone so he could contact me to sort out how we could get 50% each.

    National scam day ???

These people are most certainly not calling from Google. I work in search engine marketing and come across this type of thing more often than you might expect.

Generally what is promised on these calls is that you will always be number 1 on Google for a particular keyword or keywords and will only pay a fixed amount regardless of how many times your ad is clicked on. This is not in itself false, however the keywords that they will provide you with are very rarely searched and the flat rate they charge will always be well over the odds. Also, they will never provide you with reports as to how many times your ad was clicked on and can be very difficult to get in contact with once the campaign is up and running.

    Hope this was of help...

If anyone comes across companies like this it could be useful to post the names here so everyone will know to avoid them. They do change their names an awful lot though.

you can check a lot of them on www.complaintsboard.com. There seems to be a lot of scams recently around the Google Page Lists and Facebook.

As for the emails I have been lucky enough to win a foreign lottery and inherit a fortune at least three times this month. Those daft people at the banks keep forgetting my sign in details too and have emailed me to get them back

Always always ask for a number and say you ll ring them back, your busy now blah blah blah. Then ring google and verify the number - 100% its not theirs

I take it from your sig you are running a web based businness? Are you familiar with the area of search engine optimization?

While this fella was most likely a scamster, there are many reputable companies offering legitimate services that will help to get you to the top/first page of google search results.
