Cheaper insurance if you're a learner?

I am paying around €800 to be a named driver on my mothers 1.3L Starlet (which is expected as I'm 19y.o. male with 1 year full licence).

My brother is currently learning at the moment so just last week my mother added him also as a named driver (from now until December) and it cost €200. He's my twin so has all the same 'specs' as me apart from the fact that he is on his Learner Permit.

Why is it cheaper for him? Is it because an LP driver has to be accompanied at all times, or is it something to do with "young person loading" already being paid for me being a named driver?

    Hi

The rates of insurance are constantly changing and even change from one day to the next. I know that once you are below 25, having a full licence does not make as much of a difference as when you are over 25. The next landmark is 30 and so on so fourth.

Each insurance company will also base their rates on past claims, so you may find that drivers who pass their test who drives your make and model of car, within your age group have more accidents as full licence holders than those on a learner permit.

This can also vary MASSIVELY from company to company, as they all have their own underwriting criteria.

Would be very interested to see what your mother's renewal is going to be, because normally, they base the premium on the youngest most inexperienced driver.

Its not cheaper for him, I'm assuming that 200 is on top of what you and you mum are already paying.

Basically they base the total quote on the most liable party, so if he was named on your mums policy and you wanted to add you on it would be no extra.

Lets say your mums insurance is 1000 and to add you it is costing 800.
To ad your brother on it is costing an extra 1000 on top of your mums policy but as you are already paying the 800 it is just 200 extra.

Best thing to do is probably just split it so each pay 500 say, or if you want to work it out 1000:800 = 5:4 so split it n that ratio it'll work out at 550 and 450 ish.

Yeah that would make sense, so come renewal time, the premium will b e higher than last year due to the youngest driver on a learner permit.
