Stone mason has just completed a sandstone fireplace for me. The problem is that I find he left the stone quite messy, particularly around the joints where there are marks from mortar on the stone. I was just wondering what can I use to clean the marks off the sandstone?

Hi, not much help now i know but raw sandstone should not have been used to build a fireplace.sandstone should be treated with a suitable impregnator before working with it after treating the sandstone should be secured to the wall using some pressed steel clips and any jointing should not have been done with mortar, some from of marble glue or tile adhesive should be used.
On cleaning the sandstone you cant just clean the stain, the patch you have cleaned will discolour, best bet is to get some sand paper sand down the whole fireplace to bring it back to a level colour then use some impregnator to seal it.
    Hope this helps :)

Santrax is the most commonly known brand name for removing cement stains and spatters - it is generically described as a path and patio cleaner.
Take all safety precautions as recommended.
Also, try it first on a small unobtrusive area. A sandstone with a high CaCo2 content could be eroded by the solution - theoretically anyway. I have used it many times on sandstone and never had any problems.
