i'm no expert on such matters but it could be that the filling was made too close to the nerve, which would mean that the nerve is now acting up / in the process of dying and unfortunately, will not be taking any prisoners.

From experience, it will take a few days for a tooth with a deep filling to settle, so just give it some time (and a few prayers couldn't hurt). If the pain continues I think you might be looking at the fun choice between a root canal or an extraction :(

hope it settles down for ya

oh - and you should probably also give your dentist a quick ring to get his advice...

    Sorry to hear OP,

Thanks zeusnero but it is a popular misconception that dentists put fillings in too close to nerves and that this is the cause of problems... In reality, it was the decay that was close to the nerve, the dentist then removed this diseased tooth and then placed the filling, it is not really the fault of the dentist if the filling is big... (I know you are not having a go but I've heard this one a few times)
Some people then ask why it is sore now but not before the filling- hard to say why but the spongy decay, while diseased, can insulate the pulp/nerves from stimuli such as hot cold. Remove this decay and replace with a metal filling and thermal stimuli may be transmitted easier to the nerves initially....

    Back to you op,
It is fairly common to have some short sharp pain with hot/ cold after a filling (for the reason above) if so it will settle.
Sometimes a "high" filling can cause pain on biting on the tooth and an ache, shouldn't really wake you though...
A throbbing, nocturnal pain that wakes you like you describe sounds to me like an "irreversible pulpitis". If this is the case you are (like zeusnero says) into a choice between a root canal treatment or an extraction.
Again, this is usually not the dentists fault, they do deep fillings all the time and most work no problems, some don't and need the root canal/extraction. By trying the filling in these cases- it saves most patients money for root canals. For some patients however, it can accelerate the progression to root canal land, but in reality, the tooth was going that way anyway....

    Good luck,
    OS

As OS has suggested you should attend your dentist ASAP. Good luck
