Are people using the recession to hide blatant stingyness?

Was reading the stingyest thread there and reminded me of something i was thinking about there a while back ... all you seem to hear is "we're in a recession you know!"

now, alot of people have been effected by it. I myself am unemployed. Some have some serious hardships and people do have to watch what they spend as they dont know whats around the corner... but do you think a certain percentage of people are using this as an excuse now? Manly tight people.

This topic isnt so black and white of course. Alot of things in Ireland are a rip off. And something over priced can be mistaken for a person being stingy. For example, two people goto the cinema and buy a couples combo and see a 3d movie .... guts of 35 euro right there. Thats only two people too. Imagine parents bringing the kids.

But then you can see someone moan about the price of a bottle of milk  then the famous line comes out "recession is on ya know?!"

So boardies. Do you feel the some of the recession talk is indeed hiding ones stingyness?

Are the stingy people you are talking about the ones who, you know, save money?

No, if anything its bringing that stingyness out into the open for all to see (but not share)

Recessions a great excuse for not going to events you don't want to.
"Sorry i really want to take you to the Take That concert, but i just cant afford it"
"I understand completely honey, its a lot of money and times are hard"
HA HA i have loads of money but i'm not wasting it on that bunch of tossers.

    Companies are.
My company made it through the R-word pretty ok but still won't let me take that important course they've promised me a few years now.

Nothing wrong with Gary Barlow mate, very good composer and writer imo, as for the rest of them, I see your point ;)

If everyone who had money spent a few bob more each week instead of squirreling it away in the bank things might start to pick up a little quicker.

Times are tight. Some leniency is to be expected. Gigs such as Oxygen and the like are crazy expensive this year. Special offers reductions and incentives should be offered in lieu.

Maybe if prices were in line with what they should be for a country of Irelands economic size, then maybe people would. Throw in the fact that we are likely to have new charges in the coming years i.e water charges.... quite understandable imo.

    This.

The company i worked for at home were doing great the year I left: expanding the wrokforce, moving into new territory and they made a huge investment in another company. They still froze all pay increases that year using the economic situation as an excuse. I just left.

My company turned over 22m after tax profit last year and outsourced my job to Manchester due to the recession.

    *****.

in my experience stingyness seems to be a trait that shines through no matter what - thinking back on the people that I've considered stingy, many of them didn't even realise themselves that they were being stingy and so weren't even thinking about how to cover it up.

Sure there are people that are seriously affected by the recession and can't be buying left right and center but more often than not there's a noticable difference in their actions compared to someone who is penny pinching for the sake of it.

As regards paying €35 for a night for 2 at the Cinema - imho it's f*****g crazy. I see no point whatsoever in paying the super-overinflated prices for cold popcorn and watered down soft drinks (unless of course your motives are questionable ;))

Weird stingy people are always stingy. They don't need an excuse for their actions because they aren't even ashamed of themselves, in fact I know people who proudly call themselves 'frugal' and then go on to say that they would rather spend their money elsewhere (problem is, they never seem to spend it anywhere!) I find it an extremely unattractive trait in anyone. If you have it, spend it. If you are broke, then don't.

However, I have noticed that a lot of lazy people are using the recession as an excuse not to look for a job.. It makes me really angry and is an insult to all the people who have been made redundant in the last couple of years and genuinely cannot find work.

People giving out about the price of petrol, yet they will have no problem going into same petrol station and paying 4 or 5 times the price for the equivalent amount of water in a bottle... and these same people then go onto complain about the forthcoming water charges!

Adverts is the ultimate písstake for stingyness,i think the more well off you are the stingerer you get, often seen well off people asking for discounts then hopping into their big suv/jeeps..

There is definitely a happy middle between if you have it spend it and if you are broke don't. You can't just spend all your money on the "promise" that more is gonna come.

The way around that one is buy a large 'bulk' sized bottle of water from your local supermarket and fill a smaller size bottle at home every day before leaving the house .That way you save on the euros and should easy get two or three weeks out of it .Alternately you could fill up with diluted fruit juice of choice instead of water .It's as much about common sense as being fugal and saves paying for every day , silly water bottle prices .

It's definatley something inherent in a lot of people and all the recession does is make it easier to justify their tight way of life without looking overly tight al the time (when in fact they are.) case in point would be a 'person' I know who both him and his wife both have very well paid jobs and very secure. (I'm currently unemployed.) After visiting for 3 days and being wined and dined (by us!) we ended up paying for almost everything. Nicve food to eat AND all the meals out, except a cup of tea they paid for but only because we had become wise to their tight tricks of getting us to pay for everything (that and Mrs Lantus is very generous.) I think the week later they both bought new cars for themselves......

One problem is that we are too polite to say anything which just compounds the problem as their bad behaviour doesn't get corrected and they think its great getting everything paid for you.

Definitely. I used to work in a shop, last year a woman came to the counter, purchase comes to €10.67.

Me: That will be €10.67 please

    Her: "you'll take €10."

Me: "No, I need to take €10 plus 67cents to balance my till"

Her: *Hands over 50* "I'll be getting €40 change back"

Me: *says nothing and hands back €39.33 change

Her: *scowl* "I want a plastic bag and dont even think of charging me for that. ITS A RECESSION YOU KNOW."

Me: Thats a Government levy and if you want one it'll be 22cents.

At this she storms out of the shop (bag less). I happened to go outside a few minutes later to see her pull off in her 2010 range rover laden down with brown thomas bags....

So yes OP I agree :p

Or turn on the tap in the kitchen.

Mean people are as "stingy" as they always were, but now have a handy phrase to justify it. Also, genuinely broke people have been added to the mix, plus some with money don't want to be seen to be flaunting it, so it looks like we're nearly all putting on the poor mouth.

oh god do i know this one!
i have a regular that comes in, asks for a prewritten list of items, waits for me to ring up her total, and then proclaims
    "THAT'S TOO MUCH"
everytime, i take her reciept, add the items one by one out loud, and then wait while she glares at me, and the eventually returns some things.
worst thing is, she always pays with the top note off of a roll of fifties
THAT SHE TAKES OUTA HER DAMN BRA!!! AAAAARRRRRGH

There were always people as such around , it's just become more obious now and a bit like the round dodger or smoker who smokes everybody else's only because people are to 'polite' to say otherwise .

In good times or bad and has already described in some posts here , some of the singest and meanest people on the face of the earth although stingy people cut across all social barriers and come from all walks of life .

Being tight is another word for stingy. During the boom I was called tight once by a cousin because I didn't have a brand new car
You were tight back then if you didn't have the big mortgage, the new car, etc. and was saving a few euro for the rainy day.

Well, it's pi$$ing now and boy, am I glad I was 'tight' back then :)

I was always considered a cheap skate by people for years as i kept a sharp eye on my money and did not buy into the three and four holidays and a new car every year gang. after all why waste a few grand going out to Thailand when you can meet just as interesting folks in Kerry over a week.
