    Hi guys

The alarm on my 06 X5 has been going off for no reason lately.

It did happen for a few days a couple of months ago but stopped. It has been doing it again for a few days now although not yesterday and only once today.

    Anybody else experience this problem?

Also there is a small key on the keychain which is on both sets of keys that I have. Anybody know what this is for. Im thinking it might be to disable the alarm but cant see where it fits.

your X5 is the E53 shape, based on the E39 platform and around the same era as the E46, you will see where im going with this now in a minute ;)

the E46 has a very very common problem where the alarm goes off for no reason, and 9 times out of 10 it turns out to be a faulty alarm switch thats under the bonnet. its a little plastic button type thing. my first point of call would be to disable the bonnet alarm switch if possible and see if the alarm settles after that. or IIRC the switches are only a tenner or so, and simple to replace, may be worth replacing and see if that narrows it down.

the small key looks like a ford key, never got one of those with any of my BMW's ever! Even my parents brand new car never came with one of those?

To lock the car without arming the alarm, just use the key in the drivers door instead of pushing the buttons on it.

Another usual cause of an alarm going off on it's own are the ultrasonic sensors in the roof. I had to replace plenty over the years.

Thanks I shall have a look tomorrow. I think the keys may be from a roof rack as I had a 318 coupe a few years ago and it didnt have any keys like that.

Dont suppose you would have any idea how I might disable the switch.

Just unplug it but im not 100% sure if its possible, it may mean buying a new switch in order to narrow it down.

i would unplug it for a few days and see if that cures your problem.
