Gas Boiler Replacement - approximate costs

    Hello,

My 10 year old gas boiler stopped working yesterday and I had an installer out to tell me that it is impossible to repair it.

So I have been calling around and had a couple of guys out quoting me completely different amounts. Is anyone on these forms able to tell me what is reasonable?

It is a 20 kw boiler that I have at the moment, using mains gas. There is only one zone in the house, I do not need / want any controls, only a basic timer on the boiler. I only need the boiler replaced, no other work need to be done.

I have been quotes prices from 1,800 to 4,000 EUR???

Anything I should be careful about?

    Thanks!

It all depends on the boiler thats being supplied and the amount of material that needs to be supplied but a good new boiler would cost in the region on 1000 euro's plus then the labour and material another 400 euros and then plus the magic vat. So some where in the region of 1800 euros.

Whats the make of the old boiler and what is wrong with it???

€4000 seems unbelievable usually between €1800 and €2200. Depends on what boiler, if the gas main needs to be increased in size and so on. Why is it impossible to repair your old one? what was the problem?

I was recently quoted €4,000 for installation of a new grade A gas back boiler and a Baxi classica electric fire front.
Does this sound about right? Does anyone have any experience of the Baxi fires?

A 'normal' boiler is not an option, because they could only put it in a bedroom and the bedroom is very small so would be out of the question!! :(

This does seem expensive but you would be better getting a minimum of three quotes, is the loft an option?

Them baxi back boilers are expensive and theres a lot of work installing them aswell ,special flue has to be run up the chimney etc.
Would you consider building a boiler house outside the house ? You could get someone to build one for little money.

Thanks, I'll think about that! :)
Are the baxi boilers meant to be good? I've never even heard of baxi before!

Baxi has been around since the seventhies or longer ,but them back boilers are the first of their kind ,I wouldnt be mad on installing one.
I would explore all other options first ,including the loft as was mentioned aswell.

The Baxi boiler is one of the best boilers out there, How ever vokéra have a Balcony boiler that you can fit out side on to your wall Fitted €2000-€2500. www.vokera.co.uk/.../vokera-launches-balcony-boiler-to-withstand-the-elements/ -:o

You can have a boiler outside?!

    Whats wrong with the boiler?

As already said, it's expensive to fit a grade A Bermuda, the flue may cost a far whack of the price.

Can you put a wall hung boiler somewhere and just fit a gas fire? it may work out marginally cheaper.

It's nearly thirty years old and attached to a big, ugly, non-functioning gas fire. :(

They're telling me it can only go in the small bedroom but I'd hate that, it would look terrible I think, it's only a small room. Can you get boilers outside?? I have a kitchen extension, so I don't know if that would affect the placement.

I haven't seen any outdoor gas boilers yet, but I looked at the link above and they are out there.

It's going to be more expensive then the average fit no matter which way you go I'm afraid.

Your best bet is to get as many quotes as you can and listen to what installers say to you. If they all say the same thing, you know it's the truth.

Cool, thanks for the advice. My main concern with the baxi boiler is that if I want to change the fire at some stage, I'd have to change the whole boiler, eek.
I'll ask around anyway and get lots of quotes. Cheers again. :)
