letters on keyboard not working

    I never get simple problems.

    I've a Dell laptop, running Windows 7 64bit. It's almost 2 years old.

Recently some keys stopped working. It is not a hardware fault. The key itself works. Sometimes it's only the capital letter that doesn't work. I have to turn on caps-lock and then press the letter to get the capital letter. After a while then, both upper and lower case letters stop working. The letters effected seems fairly random, but tends to be (ghjernmu).

If I go to the control panel, devices, and then delete all I have under the keyboards section, reboot, everything then works again, for a while.

Anyone got any ideas??? I'm very confused.

    Hi Paul,

    Try the following

Start > Run > Type in OSK and then press enter

This will present you with an on-screen keyboard. As you press the keys you should see the keys on the on-screen keyboard higlight.

Also - Check that your have num lock off - Sometimes this can cause issues with laptop keyboards.

You can check out your keyboard driver by going to Start > Run Type in main.cpl keyboard and press enter - Go to the hardware tab, then properties, then driver tab.

    Hope this helps!
    ;)

I've been using OSK to get around while the keyboard is acting up.

I checked the drivers, standard PS/2 keyboard it says. No new drivers out there.

I may just log a call with Dell and see what they want (aside from a full OS reinstall).

judging by the location of the letters on a keyboard I would suggest it's a keyboard problem , especially if any of the numbers are also affected

get or borrow an external keyboard to cross check
