I don't know what's going on with my laptop...

I have a Toshiba laptop, and I have two separate users on it. There's one for myself and one for my Dad. I am currently using my Dad's because something has gone askew with mine. When I log into it, my background is gone, and it's just a black screen. My folders containing college work from last year have disappeared from the desktop. In fact almost everything has gone from the desktop apart from iTunes, BitTorrent and few other things like My Computer and the Recycling Bin and all those things. All my written documents seem to have disappeared. My Norton Anti-Virus has run out, so I think it's probably a virus of some kind. I do download music, so maybe it's from that?

But, anyway, it's virtually impossible to use it at the moment. Every time I log in, this window pops up on the screen telling me that something has happened to the hard drive, and then another window pops up with a list of the problems and asks if I want to 'fix' them. When I click on 'fix' it spends about ten minutes attempting to solve the problem, but every time it's only able to solve six out of ten of the problems, and the other attempts fail. Then the whole laptop just shuts down immediately, automatically. I can't even log on to the internet or do anything to try and fix the problem myself, because my laptop just does all these things automatically, and I can't seem to click out of any of the windows that pop up. However, when I log onto my dad's part of the laptop, there doesn't seem to be any problem. It works fine.

Sorry, if this is a bit long, I just thought I should explain fully what's going on. I'm kinda retarded when it comes to technology, and I don't really know what to do. I thought all you technology heads might be able to help me out.

    Thanks!

Go to filehippo.com and download Malwarebytes. Also download revo uninstaller and Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) AntiVirus.

Run Malwarebytes first, make sure you update the definitions first. That should catch the malware.

Use Revo uninstaller to uninstall Norton and install MSE instead.

The windows that are popping up are actually part of the malware

It's Windows Vista that's telling me there's problems. I'll try to download this and see if it works.

I think I've removed the virus, but I'm still not able to put a background on my desktop, and none of my files are returned. Are they just gone forever now, or have I not done it properly? I installed the malware thing, and ran a scan. It detected a load of affected things, and I deleted them. Then I installed that Microsoft Security thing, and that ran a scan and cleaned my computer too. I don't know if they're gone though. It hasn't really told me anything.

MSE doesn't throw up warning unless it found something, I reckon you're cleared.
Run that unhide utility recommended & you should be in the clear.
