    My initial thoughts exactly.

'Köping' is Swedish for a place of trading, so the French equivalent would have to be something like Le marche Citroën.

I wonder why Volvo wouldn't give the franchise back?

Volvo downsized their dealer network last year, just like BMW/Audi/Skoda and aren't looking to appoint anymore dealers at the moment.

I think 2 dealers for Dublin is enough, with Koping (don't know how to get the dots over the o :o) in the middle for service.

Just need some service outlets through the Midlands and Whest now. My Volvo driver in Ballina is well miffed he's got to drive all the way to Galway for a recall - Casey's were right opposite where he worked.

We're Koping not bought by EP Mooneys a couple of years before they went belly up?

That's correct. They were initially an aftersales dealer for a while but now they appear to have gotten the new car franchise as well.

I don't know why Volvo insist on appointing Ford dealers. Do they want people to think that their cars are nothing more than tarted up Fords?

Is there an actual relationship between Volvo Ireland and Ford Ireland?

Nope, not that I know of.

Sure as you have probably heard, Volvo are now owned by Geely. I'm sure any relationship they had with Ford has been or is being dismantled.

Oh yeah, I know the international version of things, I was just curious about the local arrangements. Cheers for the info.

Up until not so long ago, it was a common enough sight to see Citroen dealers in the same building as a Volvo dealer. Cashel Motor Works for example.

Wonder where that relationship came from?

I don't think it meant anything really. There were three dealers who had those franchises and two are still operating (Bill Naughton and Kenny Galway). Another one was Honda, with the likes of AutoBoland and Canavan's both being long time Volvo/Honda dealers.

Didn't Bluebell Motor Co re-open as a Citroen dealer again recently? That will make two Citroen dealers practically around the corner from each other.

Nope. Bluebell are no longer Citroën dealers.

dont several of the cars share parts ( if im not mistaken; the s40 and the focus/mondeo )

granted not enough to build 2 into the same dealership but their safe marques in most regards to purchase eitherway.

A lot of the current Volvo models share parts with Fords so it makes sense to have a Ford garage as an authorised service centre for Volvo's, and that probably how Finlay's and Smiths became full Volvo dealers eventually.

They may have shared parts (as you'd expect from most 1.6TD Volvo/Ford/Suzuki/Peugeot/Citroen) but that is never going to be a deciding issue in the granting of any franchise. Irrespective of any manufacturer/parent company connection, each franchise will have it's own criteria regarding tools, parts stock, etc. So if you have enough parts lines in stock in for Ford you will need to have a separate parts line stock for Volvo. Each franchise is granted based upon it's own selection criteria.
