Irish channels - am I missing something?

Sister has moved into a newly built house. Her hubby got someone to install a satellite (a Lidl one) for FTA - one connection in the living room and one connection in the kitchen.

The sister watches TV mostly in the kitchen and she claims she gets the FTA channels + the irish channels (RTE, TV3, etc).

Now I am missing something here? I thought if you have a FTA system the only way to get irish channels is through an aerial - this applies to saorview too. My sister says they don't have an aerial!

Rabbit ears? Aerial in attic? Poor quality cabling acting as an antenna?

There's no way she can get them on sat with a Lidl box.

It is probably a combi box, ie FTA & Terrestial Box.

But if it is a combi box you would still need an aerial to get the irish channels. She claims they have no aerial.

With a combi box, am I right in saying you still need a connection to an aerial for RTE, etc?

Yes, you do need an aerial of some sort to get Saorview.

Lidl have never sold a combi box!

In this setup - the cable would only be connected to the FTA sat box - not directly to the TV - the HDMI/SCART isn't going to carry any saorview signal to the TV tuner (unless it has an RF out ? - even then - unlikely)

For the TV to pick up RTE from the air it would have to have a signal on the aerial input - from an aerial or cable of some kind (unless the signal is very strong and the tuner very sensitive). Is it possible an old cable tv point is still plugged in ? that could be acting as an aerial as previously mentioned (badly screened cables)

They have just built a brand new house in the countryside. At the start they tried an indoor aerial - but reception was no good. So her OH got a FTA (Lidl) system installed. My sister claims she can get all the channels including the RTEs, etc and insists there is no aerial installed in the house. She claims she can get the irish channels and then switches over to the FTA box to get the other free channels.

I think I am going to have to call out to her house and check her TV setup - or talk to her OH. I wouldn't be surprised if the OH has an aerial setup in the attic - he doesn't want to pay a TV license so the less people who know about the aerial the better. :)

You have to pay the TV licence if you have a TV (or any device capable of receiving TV). Doesn't matter if you do/don't have an aerial/satellite dish/cable TV.

I know about having a TV = must have TV license (whether its FTA or aerial)

They live at the end of a country lane - in the sticks. I suppose what they are hoping is if they don't buy their first license, they won't be on the database so they won't get the knock at the door.

The satellite dish is at the back of the house - not viewable from the road.

I am just baffled that my sister says she is getting irish channels without an aerial - I am missing something.

Is there a sat. box for each tv or just one with RF distribution (via seperate modulator) & if so which room is it in?

Is the house within reasonable distance of a transmitter?

I don't really know TBH. I'll have to call out to the house to check setup or speak to her OH.

There is a TV in the living room and the kitchen. AFAIK there is a sat box in each room with only one satellite i.e. the Lidl one.

Anyways I think my Q has been answered at this stage - they can only get the irish channels with an aerial.

    Thanks.

The answer lies in her statement that she can get the Irish channels then switches over to the Lidl box for fta.

Satellite dish, the satellite is in space (and I don't think Lidl put it there).
