I am really thinking I got a dud here, the screen was only on for a little over 3 hours and the battery is dead. It seems to only get max 7 hours, unless i dont use it at all.

It was charged to 100% at the start and has put down to 0% before charging again each day since i got it around 10 days ago.

Bluetooths off, black wallpaper, the sim is a vodafone one so i havent been making calls or texts. i turn off the wifi when not in use.

9% in less than 30mins - is that normal? The screen was only on for 18 mins.

That is not normal at all!

Did you flash your phone? If not then looks like you have a faulty battery/phone and need it returned/exchanged.

Is there at least a 14/30 day cooling off period where you can return... I'm sure Meteor does something along those lines.

I'm getting nearly 2 days normal use (Few phone calls, data allowance AND WIFI and few texts a day)

I hope there is, especially when it seems to be faulty and I would accept a replacement. It was bought with voadfone payg.

Just hope theres not too much hassle (which there will be) with them sending off to technicians to test for over a week.

If it keeps going like this it will be in and around 6 hours and the most i got was 8 - besides the night i left it doing nothing sleeping all night.

sounds short dude, I usually get 10-12 hours out of mine. It's fine at the moment cause I am revising at at my desk most of the day. I do find when I am out and about I play with the SGS less than I did the iPhone 4. Don't care what the reviews say, on the same networks, with comparable usage Android battery life and power management still sucks.

Ye its not getting the advertised time (surprise surprise) but its also not getting anywhere near what other people and all reviews seem to get.

Ill talk to vodafone tomorrow, yay that will be fun …..

9% in less than 30mins - is that normal? The screen was only on for 18 mins.

Do you mean from 100% to 91%, as I think the way most phones with Li+ batteries charge is that they never quite reach 100% capacity (as being completely full is bad for the battery's life) so the phone will tell you it's fully charged from ~90% and from that point only very slowly charges the battery -as most people charge overnight, and if it charged it to 100% and kept it there, then this would shorten the battery's life. So after you unplug the phone, over the next 30mins or so the battery level corrects to it's actual level.

Someone said this before anyway -I don't actually know what I am talking about :p

I'm not saying you don't have shocking battery life

In my experience of Android, poor battery life is usually due to a dodgy app, for example I installed Executive Assistant on my SGS2 the other day (and it's quite handy) but I noticed my battery life was at 65% by 11am and so I uninstalled it and the drain stopped

The other thing that has drained batteries on me in the past is if I spend a couple of hours somewhere with no signal during the day -that just kills it as it's trying to look for signal all the time.

I'm pretty happy with my battery life at the moment. Have Push Gmail and Exchange, another email account, Twitter and Facebook syncing every 15mins, Pulse syncing every couple of hours, and spend a few minutes playing games, browsing, and just reading through tweets throughout the day. Am at 4% now and unplugged this morning at 07.00 this morning.

    Thanks.

Its not a dodgy app as I have been keeping an eye on what is using the battery.

Maybe I just have been using it a lot lot more than usual? But I still doubt that as its only gotten 8 hours with any use max whereas people are saying they get well over 12 with wifi and gps on all the time.

Are you telling me you got 16 hours with wifi on all day?

Is 8 hours ok or is it a dodgy battery?

Take a screenshot of the graph in settings/about/battery if you get a chance.

What sw version are you on? Have you rooted the phone or used any custom roms yet?

Sounds about parallel with what I am getting, with realistic usage. Men usually needs a charge before I go to bed, if I have been out and about all day. I've just turned wifi off completely same with GPS, no other way to get through the day, I have found.

Havent rooted yet, and no custom roms.

As I was waiting to see if the battery improves or if its normal, so I could return it.

Plus I cant get access to the s2 in a Windows VM and dont have an actual Windows machine so I havent had the time to root it even if I wanted to yet.

Ill upload a screenshot tonight, as its charging and probably will be dead again by 12-1 or so.

There is no major problems like android using over 20-40% of battery etc. Maybe its just me using it, Engadget did report over 12 hours with heavy usage though.

I only have wifi on when I'm at home, use data network on 3G the rest of the time.
I presume you use mobile data during the day?
I did find that sometimes (with my Hero) if I had switched data off, the email app was still trying to sync despite having no connection and that caused drain.

I wouldn't say that I have very heavy use, sometimes I might find that at 2pm or so I might only have 40% battery left if I've been using it during the morning, and once I don't play so much for the rest of the day, I have no problems getting through the rest of the day. Oh and I use a live wallpaper which is not good for battery life.

Have 26% left now, Battery usage:
    Android OS 34%
    Display 24%
    Android System 8%
    Dialer 7%
    Wifi Sharing 6%
    Voice calls 6%
    Cell standby 6%
    Phone idle 4%
    Gmail 2%
    Email 2%
    Internet 2%

Obviously if you have a dud, best thing to do is get it replaced, but if you think it's just related to your use, then tips (that I'm sure you've heard before)

    • Don't use live wallpaper
    • Put screen brightness at lowest settings (usually fine for indoor use)
    • Consider getting an app like juice defender (this switches your data on every 15mins -or whatever interval you like- for 5mins, your phone should automatically sync data as soon as knows it has a data connection, means your data gets synced every 15mins, but that data connection is only on for 25% of the time)
    • Consider using 2G network instead of 3G, this should be fine for syncing, you can just switch on 3G for when you're browsing, and will save a good deal of battery
    • Reduce the number of live widgets on homescreens that continuously update -calendars, weather, news, stocks etc. if there are a lot of these they can use a fair bit of battery
    • Reduce the syncing frequency of email, twitter, weather, news etc.

None of these things should stop you actually using your phone when you want to use it, but should reduce the background battery consumption. I find that if the battery is being used due to me using the phone a lot it, then on the battery usage it is the display that has been using the most of the battery.
By the way if a dodgy app is draining your battery, it won't be the app that shows up on the battery usage (like the way it would if you were playing angry birds for ages) but will increase the usage by Android OS

If you have all your contacts on your gmail account, I would be inclined to download SMS Backup & Restore, and App list Backup, backup your messages and Apps with these and then do a factory reset, download these 2 apps again from the Market and restore your SMSs, and restore your apps one at a time to try and see if any are causing the problem.

Or maybe throw up a list of your apps here, in case any of us recognise them as being problematic

Edit: Oh and in your browser settings make sure that Enable plug-ins is set to 'On Demand' as Flash uses a lot of battery when browsing

I not only have not been using 3g I have not been using any of the phone data, besides any idle as its a vodafone sim and I have made one phonecall and one text as it only came with feck all credit.

It seems to be getting slightly more with wifi left on, maybe i was wasting battery turning it on and off.

I dont use live wallpaper, I use a solid black plain wallpaper.
I have auto sync data off, I go into twitter or gmail to check if I want/need to.
I have the power widget, mini info widget, the application usage widget and the note widget and only three screens.
I will uninstall some of the apps I am not using and that are unknown but I dont think its any of them tbh. This is just to clean them out if they arent used, i cant see how they would affect the battery.

As the android os section is usually on average 15% give or take. (its only 12% with 28% battery left) and android system is 4%

Also plugins are on demand, and am also not using the default browser as that seemed to use a lot of resources and was crappier.

It looks like I will get 10 hours today, but I wasnt using it much at all as I was doing a lot of work on my laptop.

    Thanks.
