CM7 is better than any HTC Gingerbread could ever be, while it's disappointing to see a handset cast into the wilderness a little over a year after launch, it's actually not going to make a blind bit of difference to anyone.

Have been holding off rooting my desire for ages but might be about to take the plunge now - a bit disappointed in HTC to be honest. The phone is only just over a year old and no official updates now

A lot of angry people here too - http://www.facebook.com/notes/htc-uk/desire-and-gingerbread-update/225607660802056

I think it's probably now time for me to root and start playing with ROMs!

That's surprising as there is a leaked Asian build available for the last 2 months.

That is genuinely disappointing, I have a legend and received a single update to get 2.2 after 8months of owning.

Say what you want about the Iphone at least Apple have updated the operating system on the 3gs. I know different companies in charge of the OS and phones but still disappointing.

I can't imagine there would be too many happy people time to try the rooting route so see what happens!

    ^^ I agree.

The standard 2.2 is fine for the majority of users but those interested in the latest software should root and install Cyanogen IMHO.

Its been a while since I had to root mine as I used this permanent method a long while back.

    http://theunlockr.com/2010/09/20/how-to-root-the-htc-desire-unrevoked-method/

If there's a more up to date method someone please point it out.

http://unrevoked.com/ is very easy, you just need to make sure the USB drivers are installed and working.

    Drivers -

    http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/windows_hboot_driver_install

Run through the above and you're rooted.

Then to install a ROM just download it to your SD card, power up holding volume down, and select 'choose .zip file to install' (or something).

    Cyanogen is here - http://www.cyanogenmod.com/

Un-related to this I just rooted my desire, and was looking for a rom, as far as cynogen goes, there are 2 desires there, is there anyway to tell the difference, and when I click through on one of them, I ma given a series of updates, would I be right in thinking that anyone of those updates would be ok to download?

No drawbacks, flashing back to stock is easy as pie.

Is one GSM and the other CDMA? You're GSM.

I have Cyanogen 7 nightly #98 (Android v2.3.4) and the Tiamat v4.0.5 kernel on my phone. Went from 30mb free space to 120MB, also battery life has improved.

Did a nandroid backup of my original firmwar and setup.

used MyBackup app to backup all non market apps,settings/sms/call logs etc.. no need to backup market apps, contacts, calendar if you have google sync'ing these.

Since desire has very similar setup to the nexus one, maybe you could do something similar?

The GF is looking for me to root the phone, as she's constantly getting messages about it being out of storage etc. I've rooted my hero and used a few different roms, but always ended up coming back to a Sense style rom. Would Leedroid be my best shot at this for the desire?

I think so, I used it for a good while, but TBH now having tried CM I don't think I'd ever go back to Sense ROMS.

I'm not even sure why I liked them... nice widgets, but nothing else.

Love CM, will be a while before it works on GS2 though.

Same here. I only changed when I got fed up with running out of space but I can't think of anytrhing I miss from Sense.

What major differences would there be between Leedroid and CM?

I personally just found I preferred the widgets in Sense, enough so that I ended up going back to it after using a different Launcher (Launcher Pro I believe).

    Leedroid. Ftw

AFAIK CM is based on stock Gingerbread, but with ADW launcher and LeeDroid is based on Froyo, HTC Sense.

....but I could be wrong, I was using an un-rooted, stock Desire for the last 4-5 months (LeeDroid up to then) and only Installed CM7 a couple of weeks ago.

I was going to go out today and get a Desire S....does this make it kind of pointless?

  • Registered Users Posts: 279 ✭✭apope8

I would completly recommend this rom for anyone rooted at the moment

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054435&page=1

I have Gingerbread, new sense with new lock screen including the weather graphics. :D

    Very stable rom.

I would recommend installing 2.1.2 though as the developer has actually implemented the 3d graphics in the latest version (2.1.3) and the reviews are not the best so far.

Everything you need to know about rooting start to finish here. Very easy to follow

This is about the original Desire.
The Desire S comes with gingerbread preinstalled.
