DIY wedding flowers

    Hi everybody,

A friend of mine has asked me to do her wedding flowers. This is no problem as I have floristry skills. However my problem is where to get the fresh flowers. Is there any wholesale online site that will deliver from Holland? There seems to be lots in the UK but cant find any here. I would consider getting them from a florist but the mark up on them is too high! Also, she wants 2 different types of flowers, both in the exact same shade of pink - how can I choose these/confirm that these will be what I get?

Hope there is a florist out there who can help or anyone that has gone the DIY route with the flowers - would really take some stress off me!!

    Cheers

Before I realised that my zero flower arranging skills would equal nothing more than a headache before my wedding, I was going to go with these guys: http://www.wholesaleflowers.ie/ for wholesale flowers direct from the Netherlands.

A bride at a wedding of mine went to the flower market on the morning of the wedding and got the bouquets made there and then, I think it was the market in the City Centre

You don't say where you're located but one of the teachers I work with does a bit of floristry on the side and did flowers recently for another teacher's daughter. She went to Smithfield market and picked up everything she needed a day or two before the wedding.

    She travelled from North Roscommon.

    Hi OP,

Not sure if you managed to source your flowers. In case you haven't, it might be worth knowing that the banks in Holland won't deal with individuals. They just deal with businesses. The likes of wholesaleflowers.ie are ok but tbh the only way to ensure that you get the 2 types of flowers in exactly the same shade is to buy them in person. Even at that I'd imagine it could be tricky. I deal with flowers and find that the order I get in varies from week to week colour wise and in terms of greenery etc. (although it's ultimately the same product).
If you haven't already, visit one of the banks in Capel st market (assuming you're in Dublin). Go in advance to ensure you get exactly what you want and to negotiate a price. You'd never be able to do much negotiating if you go down with only a few days notice. Also, there's not much point buying off the street. They have a mark up like any supermarket would have. Go directly to the source!
Let us know how you get on OP. Think people are always looking for good ways to keep costs down on weddings :)

Thanks everyone. i am in the West of Ireland, so the hassle/cost of going to Dublin would make it seem to me I might be as well off going to a florist and getting them from the florist. Just would prefer not to spend the extortionate rates they charge!

I have used www.flowers4florists.com they are a dutch website and you dont need to be a professional shop to order from them. You order a week in advance and flowers arrive packed in ice with UPS couriers. They are very fresh, I normally get them delivered on a tuesday or wednesday for a friday saturday wedding. Like you, I am not a professional but often do my friends weddings. Min order is €175

Also there is www.hobbyflorist.ie It is run by wholesaleflowers.ie especially for people like you, they deliver flowers and have no min order.

There is also www.centralfloristsupplies.ie which are another irish website. Both of these sites deliver sundries as well as flowers.

I have used all of these over the years and have found them all great, you can chat to them by email and phone and all are very helpful.

Best of luck doing your friends wedding. I have always found it a great gift to be able to give people.
