2011 Mondeo Diesel Engines - 140 vs 163?

    Hi all,
Can anyone who's driven both tell me is there really much difference between the 140 and 163 tDCI engines in the Mondeo (other than price!)? Renewing company car at the moment and just wondering. I thought the only reason for wanting more power would be acceleration from stop or overtaking. A Ford dealer mentioned to me something about motorway cruising being better with the 163 version. Would it consume or emit less at higher speeds or simply have lower revs or what!?
Any help appreciated and please don't suggest other models as we're stuck choosing Fords in work!:)
    Thanks!

As you already said, the main advantage of the 163 is that it is faster (obviously). This would indeed make it more relaxing on a motorway.

However, I have not heard any complaints about the performance of the 140 model.

The one potential advantage of the 163 is that the gearing is taller so it runs at lower revs. This would reduce fuel consumption (more revs = more fuel consumption) but other advantage of lower revs is that the car will be quieter.

Ultimately, it's up to you, but if it is someone else's money then I would definitely be choosing the one with more power:D!

The 140bhp is more than enough for our roads, unless you have a specific need for the extra power I'd rather spend the difference in price between the two on a few optional extras to be honest.

Ultimately though the best thing to do is test drive both, however the 163bhp version is very thin on the ground here. It could prove difficult finding one to test drive.

Well the 163 is faster of course but also a newer engine than the 140. I have heard numerous complaints about the fuel consumption of the 140 brake engine too, rarely getting over 40mpg, the 163 might remedy this...

They are indeed the same (PSA) engine, the 163 is mapped for more power!

The stats say the 140 should be up to the job with 0-100 in 9.5 seconds. The 163 does it in 8.9, but it has a higher top speed, which suggests it could have higher gearing.

To be honest OP, if you find the 140 quick enough then that's what you should get, 1500 is a fair bit of money for something that is not that much faster - the change could be spent on things like the Driver Assistance pack, which gives blind spot information system(well done Volvo!), lane departure warning system (another thing Ford robbed from Volvo while they owned that company), high beam assitant and cruise control with speed limiter; other nice options available on the Titanium Mondeo are tyre pressure monitoring, solar reflective windscreen, and keyless go; all of these could be had in the 140 for the price of the 163 with no extras.

To be honest, those all sound like pointless gimmicks that you wouldn't notice until they break. I'd far rather have a quicker car with taller gears for better motorway cruising.

Yes 163bhp, esp if I wasn't picking up the bill.

Thanks all for the replies, much appreciated! It's titanium spec on an estate I'm looking to get and have already added comfort pack and child pack and keyless start to it (am allowed € 850 on extras so couldn't afford fancier additions). As someone pointed out the engine change would add € 1,500ish to the purchase, and indirectly I would pay a bit of it back in tax. It'd cost me about € 150 extra out of my pocket per year, so unless there's a huge difference in performance I might leave it. Looking at the stats now it seems there's a bigger difference in their 0-60 than the 60-100 (or whatever the other stat is), so it'd hardly be that much slower picking up to overtake. 0-60 I couldn't really give a hoot about for a family car anyway!:)

I have an S-Max with the 140 bhp motor, and it's not exactly fast, but it's brisk enough.

Back in 08 when I got it, the only stronger engine was the 2.5 litre 5 cylinder petrol turbo unit from Volvo, which would have been funny, but doesn't really suit a family bus doing a lot of miles.
