House Contents valuations?

My dad passed away some time ago and left my sister and I his house and its contents. We have no real interest in anything in it beyond a few diaries and lots of old photos. The problem is that we don't even know where to start with disposing of the hundreds of individual items built up by my parents over a lifetime of receiving presents and buying the odd piece of furniture, rare book, etc.

We could put the hundereds of individual pieces on eBay and hope to make enough out of it to cover the effort involved but we are wondering if there was another way?

Can I hire someone to spend a few hours in the house telling us what is junk and what is worth offering to a 2nd hand furniture/antiquities shop?

Should we set up a stall in the front garden and invite the neighbours around?

Should we just get a skip?

Thoughts and suggestions gratefully received :)
