Land Rover & Derby sales

Was anyone else at the Land Rover sale last week? I was really disappointed with it. We have €25k to spend and it's the first time I've left a sale without buying something. Very easy to turn the pages. Lots of horses a bit too big or small and those that were anyway nice were making nice money as they were a scarce resource.

Hoping for better at the Derby sale. It looks a better catalogue by a long way.

I didn't make it there myself but a friend of mine bought a 3yo Catcher In The Rye for reasonable money. He is a pointing man reinvesting after selling his last one to england. The page is a bit light alrite near the top though it does go back to one of the great jumping families. The horse itself is a fine specimen standing at 16.2h and room for more. Good and straight with a nice walk and to clean certs. He is an ideal one to break and run in a 4yo maiden next spring. The p2p fraternity were out in force (especially Colin Bowe) buying these types of stores.

I see where you are coming from alrite. Syndicates with that kind of money will be looking to buy a real black type page. As has been the case for the last few years the Land Rover sale has attracted a lot of smaller models of horses. The cream of the crop will, as traditional, be seen in Tatts next week. There seems to be a healthy demand from a wide spectrum of buyers for nice types with decent pages despite the recession. With the stronger catalogue next week the prices will be on the rise and the 25k budget could find ye out when trying to purchase out of the upper end on the middle market. Good luck anyway BI!!

Ah a man that knows my work!! We aren't looking for black type at all. Just something 16.1 from Alleged/Sadlers Wells sire line. Danehill puts me off Catcher In The Rye and Westerner but there are no rules. We've done very well with first or second foals so we are paying for the horse and not the page per se. Some black type further back wouldn't put you off but not neccessary. Hopefully we will find something.

Yeah i'd have known your head from the sales ring (the Syndicate is a dead give away :)). I suppose the main sires from the Saddlers Wells line would be Oscar/Kings Theatre/Old Vic. I'd be a fan of all three though have a special affection for Oscar. Doesn't often throw the biggest but there hearts are generally in the right place. Milan is that latest craze but I remain sceptical myself. He received unusually strong support relative to a lot of new sires from the beginning so winners were inevitable. I find the typical one to be a it slow though for the premium prices they generally go for at the sales.

One to watch from that line is Court Cave. Big fan of that one as a potential top sire. Another to watch is Tikkanen who has produced some very nice runners this season. Colin Tizzard has one that could be the real deal over fences next season.

As for the Danehill line I wouldn't knock one specifically for it if the horse itself impresses me. I think Catcher In The Rye will make a good name for himself. Kieran Purcell ran a very nice one this year in Lismore.

As I said, no rules. We picked up an Oscar last year. He seems to throw them a little long in the back but once they grow up they're ok. Our fella is a tough lad. Pity a lot of them had wind problems.

On the Sadlers line, it's easy to overlook the middle tier of sires by him who would not be fashionable but would fall into the Beneficial type of sire, reliable for the price you are paying. These include Accordion, Dr. Massini, Saddlers Hall, Kayf Tara etc. I'd agree with you on Court Cave. Milan shares a Darshaan broodmare line with High Chaparral so it will be interesting to see how much hardship they take. Sadlers is also the grandsire of Winged Love who seems to be doing ok.

The Danehills around at the mo are Cathcher, Desert King, Indian Danehill and Westerner. It will be interested to see how they get on. Catcher is a Darshaan broodmare line too which could be a positive, or not.

Salse seems to have produced a few dogs.....Luso and Classic Cliche being two.

Spectrum has the likes of Golan and Gamut on the go. They produce nice horses. Too early to tell.

    Alleged has Flemensfirth and Shantou.

It's all part of the fun.
