Is it just me, or is 4FM becoming a rebirth of what used to be Classic Hits 98FM? I know that there have been names thrown around as to what they might rebrand as, but with the music & a lot of the ex 98 staff, are they going after the old 98 market? And will it work I wonder?

Plenty of commentators have noted that their seems to be a "sweet spot" for gaining the most market share in Irish Radio. This seems to a mix of music spanning the 80s to the present day. Occassionally going back further. In general most stations seem to aim for this (outside of their specialist shows), 2FM, Today FM, FM104, 98FM. Other's claim to have some niche market, 4FM and Q102, but also seem to creep into this territory too.

Friends visiting from the UK and listening to the radio whilst driving around Ireland often comment on the similarity between Irish radio stations, and the peculiar music that frequently gets ressurrected from the 80s, e.g. Go West's "We Close Our Eyes", Yazz "The Only Way is Up" or Swing Out Sister's "Breakout".

I guess 98FM started off with some sort of "classic hits" notion (don't forget "Rock 104") but found itself drawn into this middle zone.

This reprint of a Sunday Times article sums it up quite well:

98FM didn't have a market in Cork, Limerick, Galway, etc.....
