    Hi guys,
I'm a bit of a novice, but spotted what looked to me like a c-130 over east limerick today heading north. From the altitude, (fairly low), it prob originated out of snn. No discernable markings, just that grey usaf kinda colour. Didnt manage to grab the camera in time :(

Just wondering what it might have been

    God no,
Thats the lads that were around surveying lately.
Around 16:30, heading North over Murroe fairly low, but climbing, prob after taking off from snn and doing a 180 to head north over me.
    This was more like this............

It was an American C-130, I was in just before it doing a touch & go in my little Grob, he was coming in on 8 mile finals, callsign Convoy (numbers).

If the lads in the tower down there have a camera I'd say they have some great photos

I thought my eyes were deceiving me :-)
    They must be working fine.
So it was pretty much identical to the one in the pic then?
Any idea where he was headed?
He was heading North, Maybe North North East over the Limerick Tipp Border.

C-47 doing survey work? Whats the story there?

    I think thats a DC 3.
It was being used around east limerick recently doing some survey work.
I think it was used in other parts of the country aswell as far as I can remember from discussion at the time.

It was a C130 I saw today he was heading into or out of Snn, and not doing survey work :-)

The DC-3 above is retrofitted with PT6A turboprop engines and is therefore a Basler BT-67 :D

And was originally a C-47 built in 1943 for the USAAF.

heya the aircraft u saw was a us navy c130t it went tech after dept snn earlier, it was too heavy to land so was put into a holding pattern and had to dump fuel before ret to snn approx 17.00, when u saw it he was probably after beng given vectors for approach and landing on rway 24. snn has 1 runway but is referred to either rway 2-4 or 0-6 depending on wind direction which dictates the direction its approached from. 24 is approached from the east and 06 from the west

the pic you posted is a usaf c130-j. The navy version has different props and shorter fuselage, there are pics of both versions on my flickr page for comparison.

    Thanks Moss.
    Thats a very informative answer.
I'm only a novice, and didnt know about the 2-4 and 0-6 thing.
I knew wind direction played a part alright.
As for the rest of ye, :D ye're tellin me that that 1 plane is a c-47, then a dc3, then a Basler BT-67, thats fair recycling!!! :D
