3 weeks in South America

I have 3 weeks holidays and was thinking of a trip to Brazil and Argentina in October/November.

I haven't had time to sit down and do detailed research just yet and am hoping to be set on the right track here, but I'm thinking of flying into Rio and out of Buenos Aires (will be more expensive but it will enable me to get more out of the trip). Rough plan would be to go to Rio and Sao Paulo, go across to Iguazu falls (maybe by flight) and then down to Buenos Aires, and crossing over to Uruguay for a few days.

Anyone that has done a similar trip with a similar time frame able to give me a rough itinery that I can then work off to suit? Would love to take in some of the Amazon as well.

Will hopefully have more time off next year and I plan on trying to get to Chile, Peru et al then, but due to work commitments I can only get the 3 weeks and Brazil and Argentina are what I want to see this year.

    Hi OP,

I think your idea is great. Too many people try and squeeze too much into a short time frame. You can easily spend 4 days in Rio just soaking up the place. I didn't really like sao paulo but 1 or 2 days there to see the museums would be worth it. On the way south from there to Igazu there are some really great beaches you could detour to and a trip which I recommend but unfortunately didn't get to do was the Pantanal - great wildlife and as you won't get to amazon due to time constraints this would be a great alternative. Most trips are 3/4 days.

There are some nice hostels in Igazu where you can look at both sides of the Falls and the ruins of San Ignacio Mini (Jesuit ) are close by too. Think maybe 2/3 days for this portion.

This leaves you a week in BA which there is so much to do there you could easily spend all your time in the city. I have to say I didn't really like Uruguay; I know you can take the ferry over for a day or so but I would invest the time in argentina instead. 20 hours will get you to Mendoza within striking distance of the andes. Another option would be El Calafte though this is very long by bus, around 24 hours from BA I think. You could always fly though.

Depends what you're interested in to be honest - archaeology, wildlife, culture, museums?

I got a bus from El Calafate to Puerto Madryn (which had to go through Rio Gallegas) and the trip took 26 hours. You could probably add another 19 hours to BA. If you want to see Perito Moreno Glacier you will need to fly given your trime contraints.

You dont need to visit 2 big cities in Brazil. Skip Sao Paulo and visit Ilha Grande and Paraty.

Brazil and Argentina are two enormous countries stick to just one in order to appreciate it better, theres so much to see and do in both your not going to get a feel for either in that amount of time.

Would agree with this- Brazil is the 5th biggest country in the world, Argentina isn't that far behind. Unless you invest in a flight pass (something I'd advise doing for Argentina) then 3 weeks isn't really enough to see both. You could do a road trip from Rio to Buenos and tag on Iguazu, Puerto Maydrn (killer whales, humpback, etc at the right time of year) and maybe the Moreno glacier. This is dependent on getting internal flights as buses between those places are 20hrs+.
