    Hey All,

I'm not sure if any of you remember a free lecture series that was on last year in the Wood Quay Venue in Dublin City council's offices but the Friends of Medieval Dublin are organising another series this year which kicks off next Tuesday, 21st.

There are going to be 7 speakers lecturing about people who lived in Dublin during the Medieval period.

The blurb is below and the poster is attached...Thanks:

What would it have been like to be a peasant in the medieval period?
Ever wanted to hear about the woman who married three kings?
What new information has been brought to light on the Vikings in Dublin?
Following its successful run in 2010, Dublin City Council and the Friends of Medieval Dublin are delighted to re-introduce, Tales of Medieval Dublin, a series of seven free lunchtime lectures held monthly between June and December 2011. Former minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht, and current President of the Labour Party, Michael D. Higgins, will launch the series and first lecture on 21st June 2011 in the Wood Quay Venue of Dublin City Council, against the unique historical backdrop of a stretch of the original Hiberno-Norse wall dating from the 12th century.

Tales of Medieval Dublin is a chance for modern day Dubliners to hear the exciting stories of medieval men and women who walked the same footsteps as we do today. Passing through Dublin Castle or by the surviving city walls, only parts of the medieval city can be seen, but underneath the surface of the modern capital the colourful world of the medieval city emerges. From the Archdeacon whose career ended in imprisonment and disgrace, to the Mason who repaired the great bridge of Dublin in 1372. From the Mother who gained the reputation as a jezebel, to the Peasant who overcame many problems in order to survive the 11th century. Tales of Medieval Dublin is a chance for modern day Dubliners and visitors alike to meet the remarkable citizens of this medieval city and to hear their exciting stories.

Speaking on the Tales former minister Michael D. Higgins said “The possession of their heritage and having access to the scholarship that supports it are vital components of citizenship. These lectures organised by Dublin City Council and Friends of medieval Dublin will encourage active and reflective engagement for those seeking citizenship in its fullest sense.”

The Friends of Medieval Dublin, www.fmd.ie, is a study group whose aim is to increase knowledge about, and promote public interest in, medieval Dublin. The Tales of Medieval Dublin lectures are collaboration between the Friends of Medieval Dublin and Dublin City Council.

Please join us on Tuesday 21st June 2011 at 1.05pm, and be among the first to hear and experience these Tales of Medieval Dublin!
