Best diesel for €10k?

Simple really, whats the best diesel car you can get for €10k these days?

Its for one person who rarely has more than two people in the car, doesn't need it to haul things around, just for a daily commute of around 100 - 150 miles a day.

Bit of power would be a bonus, willing to get it mapped if needs be, but its not essential.

    NO OCTAVIA vRS's !!

I've very little interest in diesels so said I'd stick this up and see, I'm thinking a 1.8+ Turbo diesel hatchback of some kind?

    Any opinions?

1.9 Tdi Golf. They are 105BHP as standard and can be chipped to around 140/150 safely. In saying that mine has enough poke and comfort to do me :)

Recommendations other than VAG cars would be higher up the list :D

    Vectra sri cdti 150bhp
€308 to tax for the year !, still a fresh looking car despite the introduction of the Insignia. Can't post a link but a very nice 08 model on donedeal with only 30,000 miles for 10k, 9 cash would take her i'd imagine

    Civic (hatchback) 2.2 i-CTDI?

Great interior specs, nice to drive, great reliability, VAG-esque depreciation curve. They seem to be a love/hate car with regards to looks. I'm in the love camp :D

182ps? Thats impressive enough! But would €10k get one?

That's good, but i think the 400lbs torque is even more impressive. Standard before a remap is 140 and 300 -ish I think.

    You'd get a v good spec one for 10k.
Above the SE trim level you get cruise control which might suit you too

    e.g.

    A nice black one

    A sporty red one

or, if you wanted to swap for your ST, you could always try this guy who has it mapped up to 193 bhp already!

02 MG ZR 2.0 turbo diesel. Under 3k easy

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1733699

05 Seat Leon Fr 1.9 tdi 150bhp, newer model's look much better but I heard the early ( 05-07 ) 2.0l turbo diesel's are troublesome.

    Worth under 5k I think

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/1978128

05 Opel Astra Sri 150bhp 1.9, under 5k would buy this too imo.

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2139506

    02 Audi A3 1.9tdi 130bhp, 3k

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2139506

06 Alfa Romeo GT JTD 150bhp.

ALFA GT would be my first choice, would love one.Astra 150bhp are nice as well.

Mondeo ST does it for me.

You'll get a well sorted car for that money.

yep,the uk is the source for these but I'd buy from an enthuasiast if poss, but btw- they command good sterling prices in the uk, but at least Sterlings weak at the mo....

Not optamistic at all mate, 2 lads in work got them chipped. 1 got theirs done at 140 and the other was done to 150.

I have seen custom remap files for them at 167/169bhp over in the UK. Only problem with thats is you will have to change the clutch and flywheel along side the remap and will cause big problems down the line.

They are all on the old cc based tax, I doubt €10k would stretch to a 2008?

€156 versus €860, would depend on the price difference between that 2007 and a 2008 to see if it would be worth going for a 2008, but a quick search there suggests 2008 ones command a good bit more than €10k.

Hmm, ye it would require finding the right deal alright.

For example if you could get this guy down to £6800 (about €7700), then VRT is €2400 I believe which puts you right on the 10k mark.

Edit: Here's another cheap one that gets you inside the threshold.

The odd one inside that budget pops up now and then, otherwise you're looking at 11 or 12k - depends on what you can get for the ST.

Having said that, 2007 are significantly cheaper - about 2k cheaper. And there's always those rumours that the emissions tax banding is going to be extended down from 2008, which would line you up for cheaper tax in the future! Not ideal though I agree. Although not any different than if you get any other 1.8+ engine under 2008 as people have been suggesting!

Your talking nm I think, a diesel Civic wont get near 400lb ft torque without some serious work.

Not a particular strong engine anyway, stock 140bhp and 250lb/ft torque isnt that great for a 2.2 diesel.

BMW, VW, Volvo etc are all making alot more with there 2.0 diesels.

If your going to spend the 10k+ on a quick diesel hatch I would buy something like below, it would blow the Civic away.

    BMW 120D 177bhp, 258 lb/ft stock.

They would produce well over 200bhp mapped.

Fair points, and prob yes on the torque :o

I also really like 1 series, so you'll hear no argument against from me.

Actually, on further reading (Parkers), it seems the 120d and civic have the same stock torque, the bmw has it beat by 20 bhp only, but the civic has 6mpg on it. So the engines aren't as far apart as originally thought

Seen a lovely R Design Volvo C30 on the motorway yesterday. It actually made me look twice.....my opinion on these has definitely changed! It was a diesel too, but dunno if it was a 1.6 or a 2.0. Would a 07-08 be in budget yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,272 ✭✭✭✭Atomic Pineapple

€10k doesn't seem to stretch to a 2008 Civic which is a pity and there is a serious lack of 120d's around for €10k also.

1.6d would be pretty slow, but the 2.0d is damn nippy in the S40 so should be slightly better in the C30. Rare as fcuk though as the few that bought went either FF or 1.6d.
