Israel launches its campaign

Israel has started mobilizing its embassies for the battle against UN recognition of a Palestinian state in September, ordering its diplomats to convey that this would delegitimize Israel and foil any chance for future peace talks.

Envoys are being asked to lobby the highest possible officials in their countries of service, muster support from local Jewish communities, ply the media with articles arguing against recognition and even ask for a call or quick visit from a top Israeli official if they think it would help.

    http://www.intifada-palestine.com/2011/06/secret-cables-show-israels-battle-plan-over-palestinian-un-bid/

    EDIT:
I omitted to make comment when starting this thread, for which I apologise, so let me leave this belated comment to try to make amends .....

I guess Israel's reaction in mobilising its political forces is not unexpected, but I fail to see their logic, when they claim that a Palestinian state would somehow de-legitimise Israel.

    regards.

Well, good luck to them, as there going to need it, as the International concensus of a Palestinians state on the 67 borders is widely accepted by most of the world, and to claim that the recognition of this, somehow delegitimizes Israel (which is what Israel claims) is of course nonsense. All, it does is recognise that Israel has no right to land outside of its borders, and which again is nothing new, and again widely accepted.

Seen this on a few other sites, seems legit

    Realpolitik at its best.

Here's info on this from Haaretz.com
In his cable, Gilon asked the ambassadors to prepare plans "that will lead the country in which you serve to oppose or abstain during a UN vote." It divided the EU countries into three groups:

    * Countries that have already voiced objections to unilateral Palestinian action. A Foreign Ministry source put Germany and Italy in this category.

    * Countries whose stance is unclear, particularly members of the former Eastern Bloc that had recognized a Palestinian state back in 1988. These include the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. In two weeks, Lieberman and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are planning to make separate trips to these countries in an effort to persuade them to vote against a Palestinian state.

    * Countries that tend to automatically side with the Palestinians and are expected to support a Palestinian state, among them Sweden, Ireland, Belgium and Portugal.

    tsk, tsk

Yes the Hasbara will be busy doing their bit for little Israel.......but surely the Yanks and some of their bitches like Britain, Canada etc will veto it at the UN ?

There doing it in the General Assembly, where the US or Britain don't have a veto. If things go to the security council, then the US will veto, but they will be alone in doing that, like the last time, they used there veto in the security council in regards to Israel.

So are they talking about a Palestinian unilateral decision, or one backed by the UN or whatever organisation votes for it ?

If the Palestinians declare a state unilaterally, doesn't that mean they can choose the borders themselves ?
If that's the case then I see Israel's case.

If it's not then Israel should just go along, as a two state solution is the only way forward.

Has Israel specified its borders? ........ I didn't think they had ...

If this passes then I guess Israel's borders will be defined by default.

True enough, they haven't specified there borders, but most of the world sees the 67 borders, as being Israels borders, and anything beyond that not theres.

Maybe they could try to get on our good side by helping to clear the backlog at the passport office?

Israel will fail. Palestine will be recognised. End of story.

The usual will happen, the Americans will jump to the defense of the Israelis while the Israelis pull the antisemitism card and the rest of the Western countries release general statements which neither support nor condemn the motion. It will die down for a year or 2 and start again.

Wouldn't mind if a few diplomats / politicians gave them a few choice words on playing the antisemitism card at this stage, it's getting irritating at this point.

You don't want to see peace?

You don't want to see peace?

He actually doesn't understand the conflict. He is the product of a "you support this, so I must support that" environment.

Keith - Elaborate on your comments. Do you believe the Palestinians have the right to their own state, based on the 1967 borders?
