Yea I am really enjoying it so far.. I live approximately 7k north of the regional airport so R117 is no stranger to shaking the house and getting me running for the scanner :-)

Didn't catch it last year so I'm quite happily watching for the first time, I had a quick look around RTÉ news to see if there had been any updates on the planned reduction of services, last I saw was new faster helicopters based in more spread out bases but that Waterford would still be going 12 hour, under the new administration has there been any change of heart?

    This too shall pass.

The "new" helicopters will be located at the present bases(if Sligo airport survives it's pso grant cut) and all will be 24 hr operations.

I always give a quick... Father, son, holy spirit, Turas Sábháilte. whenever i see R115, i truly hope never to have to unwillingly or unknowingly be brought aboard an Rnli Vessel or Coast guard chopper, but it's great that i know they are there day or night, blind weather or SKC.

One day i'm going to fly one of those, crosses fingers, eyes, legs, arms, toes.. :D

I can't wait for the new series :)

I am relived to hear they are getting new machines. Out of curiosity a few months back I googled their respective registrations. I was surprised to see that these current machines were new in around 1978.

Must say though, respect to the service crews.

Wow thats even older than me. Are they a Russian built machine? Also were these the helicopters that Irish Helicopters used to use in the 1970s for the Kinsale gas rig contract?

Igor Sikorsky himself was a Russian who fled to the states after WW1 and became a citizen of the US,before founding his helicopter company so technically the company is American

EI-BHO "Hotel Oscar" and EL-BLY "Lima Yankee" were the original S-61's owned by Irish Helicopters used for the rigs and then as SAR choppers in Shannon
when Irish Helicopters lost the SAR contract they were sold to the UK where
"Hotel Oscar" became the UK CoastGuard's "Whiskey Bravo" of Seaside Rescue fame!

I'd love to see an S-61 kept in an Irish museum when they are gone,it's given over 20 years of lifesaving service to Ireland.
an amazing helicopter to look at,amazing to fly in!

No contest which is the more impressive looking bird, S61 hands down every time.

Well done, you are well informed. That S-61 is indeed a classic machine, I always admire the hum of them as they pass overhead.
Lets hope someone does give one a decent retirement home where we can all go and visit it.

With their heavy lift capability I'd say you'll see them going off logging somewhere or doing some similar job. They've been so well maintained that they won't end up in a museum yet I reckon.

When these babies retire they will be kept busy for a long time to come...but not in this part of the world and not in SAR.:(

I have a photo of one I caught in Kandahar, somewhere.

Does the S-76 have a splash landing capability? Those side pods look invitingly big for flotation use, though I can see how just filling them with fuel could be handy for long-distance SAR purposes...

    NTM

Technically no, the S-61 is the only one with the amphibious hull.
