I've seen people in some other airports use their smartphone to display the barcode on the boarding pass and get through security that way. Does anyone know how security and gate staff would react to that in Dublin (or other Irish/UK) airport/

BMI use this system at Heathrow. it is a multimedia text message that contains a bar code and it works quite well. It is a separate system to a boarding pass, not just a case of opening up an email on your iPhone.

Every day I see passengers showing their iPhone to the cabin crew as they board the aircraft. Paperless Boarding Passes. I think most use e-tickets now also. I know BA have thier own 'apps' for iPhone.
I do not know if Android or Windows based mobiles or should I say Smartphones can do this yet. If not I am sure the appropriate 'apps' are not far away.

Why would need a separate app? Surely just displaying the barcode on the boarding pass would be the same as handing them a printed copy of the boarding pass?

Boarding Passes need your Name, Seat Number, Boarding Gate and time and any priorites you maybe entitled too displayed on them. This iPhone 'apps' is more or less doing exactly what the check in machines are doing. With the BA iPhone 'apps' you can book, check in and display your boarding pass all within this one 'apps'.
As far as I am aware you can check in on an Android 'apps' but do not think you can book tickets or display a boarding pass. I have never used any Windows based smartphones.

EDIT: from what I can see you cannot book on BA's iPhone 'apps'

Aerlingus are rolling it out on London and Manchester flights at the moment.

CityJet also use in on DUB-LCY route, just download the airfrance app, then when you check in online they send the email to your phone with your boarding pass barcode, scans through security and the boarding gate the same as a peice of paper, pretty handy

lufthansa allow it, i flew with them a few weeks ago via frankfurt and it was an option i think.....but i didnt use it. i saw one lad use it though from outbound frankfurt flight so cant see why not its allowed in Dublin.

the airlines could just code it in html5 and not need a phone specific app
