SATA HDD Replacement

I know, I know... This has been done quite a bit, but this question (according to what I could find in search) wasn't answered yet.

I am aware that it is simply a necessity that it's a SATA 2.5" 5400rpm internal HDD, which is all fine and dandy, I know what I need at least. But I've come across the other versions of the SATA HDD's over the net, moreso than the one that is used in the PS3, like SATA II (300, whatever you want to call it) and to a lesser extent SATA III (600). So I just what to know, in spite of this being a potentially naive question - unbeknowst to whether it's common knowledge or not - will the SATA 2 work with the PS3, despite SATA 1 being the advised hard drive?

Even it is compatible, what are the potential draw-backs in comparison? Is it advisable to get the SATA 2? And, lastly, are there any Irish computer/IT retailers in Ireland that sell these interior hard drives on-hand? Internet sites are the only places I've seen people pointing towards. I live in East Cavan, so Dublin's only an hours' drive, so Dublin retailers are grand for me, but anywhere closer like Dundalk, Drogheda, Navan, Newry or Cavan town would also be ideal?

    Many thanks in advance! :)

As far as I know, you can install a SATA 300 but you won't get any benefit from the faster transfer speeds.
Komplett sell them and have a pickup point in Dublin. Peats and Maplins will likely to have them in stock too, and maybe even PC World/Dixons, but you'll probably end up paying a bit more than online.

Here the HDD I put into my PS3 to upgrade the HDD as I ran out of space, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-Internal-Playstation-Compatible/dp/B0037NYQ5C/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1307957781&sr=8-8

I have had no problems so far with it, had It over a year and has tons of space but you wont get the full 640GB as the PS3 takes a chunk to run itself, hope that helps :D
(Also be careful taking out the screws especially the blue screw on the PS3 HDD if you havent taken it out before as it is like its made of butter)

Great help, thanks man! I like the look of one of the hard drives on Komplett's site. How does ones' account work with Komplett do you know? Because I have one of those 'monthly statement' accounts with another internet trader I only had the intention of using as a once-off and it's a pain in the hole. I just want to get the fucking thing, pay for it and be done.

That's cool man, cheers for the advise. The HDD looks great, I'd say it does the job well. I'll be sure to take great care with the screw, it's a 60GB (currently ;)) that I've had since its' release and I have not looked inside it one, so I will try and be cautious.

Make sure you have the right screw driver when you start as its extremely easy to strip the head of the blue screw especially, almost happened me  Heres the a link to the guide I used to do it for my 60GB PS3, its easy enough to do.

You'll need to register with them and order it online, but if you plan on collecting, you can pay by credit card or laser when you are collecting it, no need to give details online, they have (or did when I was last there) the machine there so just like buying in any other shop.

The Western Digital Scorpio blue one (500gb) is about 48 from Amazon (not sure if you have to pay delivery on top of this or not) but if you want one quickly both elara and komplett have pick up points in dublin (park west or blanch) where you can pick it up almost straight away for free at a total cost of around €52.

There isn't any benefit to installing a drive with better transfer speeds as this is not what limits speed when you're installing stuff/loading games as far as I know. If you google it you'll get loads of articles which explain it properly.

That's all a great help guys, thank you very much! Have any of you received things from Komplett via post? Just interested as it would be helpful to find out how long it takes to get from the depot to wherever... I think I might just give them a ring in the morning.

Elara have a forum on here, you could ask there regarding delivery times if you wanted to order from them (should be same price as komplett).
