Over the weekend I have been offered a CASE IH 1394 2WD...Its in great condition having covered only 2850 genuine hours.Normally I would snap this up if it was a Syncro as my dad used to have one years ago when the home place was all DB, but I have heard such horror stories about the Hydrashift that I am not so sure.I only want it for light work and road runs etc. Should I be wary?

I am not too familiar with these type boxes, but I would be a bit wary of them because I don't know enough about them.I believe parts can get expensive, but if you can find someone who is knowledgeable about them that would be wise. Here is a post from these people on this very good site.
