Dust 514 - New MMOFPS

I've been following this since it was announced in 2009. It's a PS3 exclusive MMOFPS where the ground battles influence planetary sovereignty in a separate online game, Eve Online. It's pretty ambitious, but if they pull it off it could be a fantastic game. Below is the latest trailer from E3:

Listening to early coverage, I was concerned at, what seemed to be, a lack of respect for the console players. Didn't sound like there was much incentive for them to do the bidding of their 'pc-playing overlords'.

I still think consoles are going to find it very difficult to have MMO games anyways. Im not sure if the DC Universe one took off but I just really couldnt see myself playing it on a console..

Don't think they'll have a choice. The game needs to interact cross platform with EvE on the PC, the two will be connected in much the same way as Shadowrun was on the 360 and PC.

There's no way that Microsoft or Sony will allow a game on their console to interact with Dust 514 on their competition's console so the developers have to pick either one or the other.

Well it was more a point of that the PS-3 us due for replacement, none of the consoles have a noticeable higher market share ala PS-2 and this excludes the largest market which is PCs in the first place.

Disagree they have them now they just havent linked it all together. COD is basically a MMO console users play it with others they know with a view to ranking up.

Love this part:

Will it be an actual MMO or is it just going to be like a battlefield in WoW without the rest of the game ?

Sounds too good to be true. Would be afraid that it'll disappear into the sunset when the funds run low... can't see people buying enough add-ons to keep it profitable, unless the "optional add-ons" are stuff like oxygen that is "optional", but you'll die without it :pac:

From the introduction video it looks like anything but herp a derp guns/armor. I.e. custom armor was 250k, tank were 1.4 million, command ship with rockets was 120 million etc. The question is how much you can earn in game (i.e. is a command ship 3 games or 300?)

Since the interaction with Eve is there and CCP are all about the player driven economy chances are than all the ISK will come from Eve players.

"Want the capital city of that planet? Spend your ISK and hire some Dust 514 corp." "If you want to win, give them decent equipment" The larger resources and units (like the command ship) look to be corporation resources that individuals won't be buying, until a few months in to the game when the isk is flowing freely.

As someone who played Eve Online extensively I can shed some light on how this is expected to work.

Eve is basically a game of political, economic and military dominion (at least outside of the non-PVP areas). Players are alligned with corporations, which in turn group into Alliances. Alliances are engaged in perpetual war for control of extremely valuable resources in what is essentially the wild west with spaceships. Massive fleets of hundreds of ships, each controlled by a different player, launch invasions and raids against each other constantly. Control is established by deploying long term space stations around planets.

When Dust goes live, these alliances will have to hire Dust514 mercenaries to be deployed in ground invasions to seize control of planets, those battles taking place in first person within Dust.

How well it will be implemented I don't know, but I would imagine that keeping an eye on Eve politics will make the game a hell of a lot more interesting. Knowing if you're engaged in a small backwater skirmish or the full scale invasion of a super-power's core worlds could, I imagine, alter your perception of events.

I believe Eve players and corps will be able to finance Dust players, so take orders from PC overlords, get all your equipment paid for forever.

*Note I don't play Eve so I may not understand what I'm talking about.

I would literally kill to play this on PC. I love the EVE setting but mummorpegehs don't do a whole lot for me.

If this works out it would be pretty amazing. Even just as a novelty.

Its stange though, eve community is probably one of the most "hardcore" and elitist, who look down on even other pc gamers as peasants, and they will be playing with console FPS players, probably as low as you can get (in their opinion).

But doesn't that fit in with the tone of the crossover perfectly? The great space generals and corporations who are hiring the grunts would have the exact same contempt and distaste for them.

The only problem I can see really is that Eve is so full of people more than happy to exploit and gamebreak any loophole that they can, that they end up purposely sabotaging ground assaults against their interests. They can play Dust, take contracts from rival corps and just sabotage the ground assault by being rubbish.

Well they wanted to do cross platform across Xbox 360 and PS3, but apparently Microsoft balked at the amount of control CCP wanted over the servers (so the story goes anyway).

This is why i think it will be brilliant. The trailer clip of the guy in the space ship selling out all the grunts on the ground and ordering an orbital strike killing them all was amazing. It will fit perfectly with the whole PC elitist/ console grunt image that reflects (i wont say real world but in the movies anyway) the way the soldiers on the ground and military high command operate.

I do like the way the vehicles etc are assets that are purchased and don't just keep respawing. Someone has to pay for them so be careful.

Whole thing could be amazing but more than likely will be ruined by a combination of ass munches either taking it all too seriously or not seriously enough if that makes sense

If there is one thing CCP do well, it is cinematic trailers. They always made Eve Online seem FAR more exciting that it actually is. I suggest fullscreen HD, and listen to the audio, it helps make sense of what is going on. It's basically a highly dramatised version of how large scale battles happen in Eve. All of this happens before a system is secured and then the Dust soldiers are deployed:
