Irish plate designs are defined graphically - I know - in the legislation, which makes it a bit of a grey area. So does the fact they're legal in Germany -- common market and all that. In reality, german plates are very popular on BMWs and the evidence on BMW-Driver.net suggests that they're pretty hit and miss -- some people have gone through with nary a mention, others have failed because of them.

If your friend has the old plates, I'd say bung them on for the NCT to save themselves the hassle and a few quid. Similarly, if a Garda tells them to take them off, it's probably in their best interest to do so. Although if they take it to court, I'll cheer for them*. :)

    * Not because of the plates, but because any Garda that cites for them is an officious d*ckhead. Personally, I think they look a little silly.

I'm not sure if they have the original plates for the Dune even though they VRT'd it recently but they should have them for the Audi.

Some have the IRL on the plate in the blue section, and room for the county in Irish on top. Most don't though, the letters I've seen in most take up the entire plate's vertical height so no county name can be included, and the plate usually has the D for germany on there too. You'd fail for both those issues.

What is the obsession with German plates anyway? I mean seriously, to go to the trouble of sourcing, paying for and fitting these reg nos...then the hassle of worrying are they legal come NCT time - all for a different letter font that apes our Euro-creditors. Anal in the extreme and just a bit sad...
