So i'm finished my Leaving Cert in a couple of weeks and i'm dying to get back into football. I'll be training twice a week for the u21s but I haven't played all year due to the LC so I want to do 2/3 extra evenings practice myself.

I'm just wondering what would ye recommend doing? I was thinking of practicing shooting from the 14 yard with my weak foot then progressing to the 21 and then to the 45 and also shooting from all angles. What else would be good to do?

    Any help would be great.

    Thanks.

Start on the 14 with the weak foot, then go back to the 21, then at an angle, and progress out. If you miss, go back into the previous spot you were.

Prob the most important thing is getting back used to the ball in your hands, maybe some high fielding by throwing the ball off a wall. Judging by the post, you are a forward, so maybe if you could get a friend down with you, practise taking them on and beating them before scoring. Some general fitness work would be good to do as well.

I used leg weights myself (forward too) to build up power while on the pitch but apparently long term use can be damaging so i used them just for shooting.

Another thing i do is if i am on my own i will mark out a spot or focus on a higher spot and try hit that from multiple angles (much harder than puttin the ball between the pins believe me)

Do as much work on your weak as you can man

Best of luck with it :)

Wrong sport I know, but Johnny Wilkinson used imaging a clowns mouth just over the black spot on the bar, so then if you miss that, you still have a margin of error to get the ball over the bar

Yup thats the logic behind what i do, if you can nail that spot multiple times puttin it between the posts or over the bar will be childs play

For underage lads that want to do more skill/speed work on their own I would normally recommend they do "T" drills. Have 3 balls on the 21 yard line, 1 in the middle and 2 further out, starting on the goal line, sprint out to the first 1, pick, turn and shoot, then go for the 1 on your "good side", in 1 motion pick it, into the hand then shoot, finally turning, sprint hard to the last 1 and do the same.

Not only will you build up your sharpness but you should improve your "burst" speed as well.

Yeah I definately need to work on my weak foot. Thanks for the tips.

I was thinking 'bout getting them and just wearing them around the house, never thought of wearing them on the pitch.I mightn't wear them on the pitch if they could cause damage. Would Ebay be the best place to get them or Elverys in town? Thanks.

I'm looking forward to trying that out thanks. I won't be just shooting from around the place which I intended to do,sprints should make it a lot more challenging :D

If you can get yourself near a 'hurling wall' it will be a great benefit to you also,it will really help with your hand to eye co-ordination especially if your kicking the ball from a close range.

Well from what i gathered when i was looking them up that would be more likely to cause damage (the wearing them in the house during the day etc) so i just use them when running shooting or kicking drills i noticed an improvement very quickly when i was playing.

I got mine online, if i were you price them in elverys and then look online see what your best option is from there, oh and i will let you in on a secret, use tape! My legs were raw from the weights rubbing against them when i started :)

Maybe get the underwrap used by physios before they tape joints to reduce the hassle trying to get the strapping off and pulling off the skin -just one example here

I could imagine the shipping being expensive enough with the weight of them but yeah i'll price around thanks & i'll only wear them the odd time on the pitch.

    Cool thanks.
