Bringing documents to garda station

Boyfriend was driving my car the other day and was stopped at a checkpoint. Guard wants him to bring documents to the garda station, license, tax, insurance and nct.

He'll bring his license and insurance in tomorrow but we wont have the other documents until later in the week. He'll be working 13 hour days from Thursday until the ten day period closes next Monday so won't make the Garda office opening hours.
Could I, as registered owner of the car, bring in the tax and nct??

I'd say you could and if they have a problem with it they'll tell you.

Most Garda Stations are open 24hours

In urban areas yes, but in rural areas you would be lucky to find a station open when it is convenient.

You don't frequent the Legal Discussions forum; you can see the whole sorry tale, no tax, no NCT, out of date learners permit over there.

I know from when I was asked for them, they're looking for the cert itself, not the bit in the window.
I had all the up-to-date stuff in the window and still needed to produce tax, insurance and NCT certs in the station.

OP: I wouldn't say its a problem for you to bring them in on his behalf. Tho I would just get him to mention it to them when he's in with his licence.

OP, you have no NCT or tax when the car was stopped, surely taxing it and NCTing it now still has you up sh1ts creek??

I hope so anyway, or else the it's a joke for those of us who don't stick two fingers to the law.

Producing piecemeal may cause problems with a possibility of a summons being issued. It is best to produce everything at once.

A little harsh but sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind:D

I love been pulled at checkpoints in my 91 golf and the officer telling me that my tax and nct are in date, Wow I don't need to be told this when I already know! My other favourite is you have good tyres! Sorry went off topic, lack of sleep!

i dont think they give you a few days to produce the docs in order that you can go out and get some. I think they want you to produce docs to show that the car was taxed, insured and NCTd and a license held by the driver at the time it was stopped.

I spoke to the Garda on the day and told him that the car had been transferred over to my name, had been off the road for the months previous, that I had sent off the signed form by the local guards stating this to the tax office in the post and was waiting for the tax disc. I told him that I would go to the motor tax office and get the form that had been signed by the guards showing this and would produce it at the time of producing the other documents. Which is what I have done and will do.
I just forgot to ask if I could do it as I wasn't driving the car.

how many times do ya think a guard hears that at a checkpoint
like others have said ya have to produce to show everything was in order at the time, its not a notice to tax and nct the car

Technically the person who was driving has to produce the driving licence & insurance cert. but the Gardai are well used to mammies and daddies producing the documents for their children and they typically don't object.

Thanks to those who have provided helpful responses. I've been in touch with my solicitor and gotten some very good advice.
