Engine problems after rain

    Hi all,
I have a 93 mitsubishi lancer 1.6 GLXI. I've got problems with the engine power dying after a heavy or constant rain shower. The car will start but when I get up to 20/30mph the power may die and the car starts chucking. It'll get going again after a minute or two.
Its always been serviced regularly and past the NCT for another 2yrs but the mechanic has no idea what could be causing it.

Also happens if there's surface water on the roads.

Dampness around the ignition ht leads, I'd guess.

I'd say change the leads and also clean under the distributor cap. Get a water repellant spray and give it a shot under the cap and on the new leads.
If the leads were bad, the current could leak through the insulation to earth off the engine block. This would result in the chucking/misfire. Water or damp would exacerbate the situation.

Is the engine undertray in place?

David could be right about dampness causing HT leakage, but road splashes should not get to the ignition if the undertray is in place.

I wonder is the air intake on correctly? Bits of water getting in and giving the MAF sensor wrong readings? And it stops after a few minutes maybe that is it drying out?
